This question is likely to set me off on one of my favourite rants, so I'll control myself and keep it very short.

The answer is: Absolutely not! The world is full of nutters who like to make themselves important by foretelling death and disaster - go to Google and search on Harold Camping as an example. It is also, sadly, full of people who who are inclined to believe anything if they hear it often enough, despite a complete absence of evidence.

Having successfully avoided a rant, I'll wish everyone a happy 2012 and an even happier 2013!

lol Annista, happy 2012/2013!

I don't think the world is likely to end either - but we are publishing a book soon which involves the Mayans and I was pondering whether 'buy this book before the end of the world' might work as a marketing tactic ;)

I heard LAST year that the world was going to end - havent heard that 2012 will be the end. I have absolutely no idea when the world is ending and quite honestly it's the least of my problems. Son's health (and mine) is my foremost concern.

Seriously, I really wouldnt worry about it. Happy New Year!!

Cosmic alignment

Over the last year the sun has been very active with solar flares and sun spots, these have been credited with the global disasters that we have been seeing in respect of flooding and earthquakes. In December 2012 the Mayan calender runs out, also for the first time in 385000 years there is going to be a cosmic alignment of all the planets in our solar system. This is what the prophecies are based on, personally I don't think it will be the end of the world, but there may be some changes.

Lol I first heard of it while I was at college over 10years ago and still remembering some distressed and hysteric class mates...

I personally don't think it's gonna happen but then again nobody knows. I wouldn't bother worrying though.

Happy new year :-)

Apologies. Re-write.

Just noticed your age, at the same age everyone was worried about the Cuban Missile Crisis and the possibility of nuclear war. Fortunately all was sorted out. Back then, there was no Internet, Facebook, Bebo, Google and a hundred different ways to read articles and rumours. Thus at 10, our only worries were the PT teacher who held us by our ankles to encourage us to do handstands on our own, whether the buses ran on time letting us catch the newest tv programme. Blue Peter. My claim to fame being a winner of their first competition and still have my Blue Peter badge. Lastly what would be for tea.

I do feel from listening to my granddaughter at five and her friends that maybe the news programmes and headlines of papers should remember they are being read by all ages and that non-adult readers may not know the difference between fact and rumour. I know you are twice their age but the same applies. Don't fill your head with newspaper headlines, rumours on the web or what someone at school has said. Do though fill your head with the joys of life, loud music for instance, get outside and explore with friends. Ok? You'll be having to much fun for the doomies to get to you. Look at them as having their own little black umbrella. Get under a sunny parasol instead. Ok? Welcome to the forum by the way. Wishing you a happy new year.

Oops

Edit: posted twice.

If you believe the Mayan predictions the world will end on 21/12/2012. But where are the Mayans now? We were told it would all end in 2000 but we're still here. Live your life, don't wish it away.

GrannyMo, I barely remember the cuban missile crisis, but your post reminded me of my first term at grammar school when the Arab/Israeli 6 day war started. Our maths teacher spent all of one lesson telling us that there would be a nuclear war and we'd all be vaporised. There were hysterics from several pupils and complaints from many parents. Oh, and no nuclear war, no vaporising and the world didn't end.

It seems to me that there's always someone who gets a kick out of frightening people when reassurance and common sense are required.

I remember over my lifetime (boy, I sound old! I'm in my 40s btw), there have been several times now when the world should have ended, and I believe it hasn't yet, unless I'm living in some parallel universe or something! At one time it was supposed to be nuclear war with Russia that would do it, another time some prophecy or another. I can remember been very worried as a child that it might happen, still hasn't yet. There was a big rumour going around at the time, and as kids we all passed it on, and got scared! Can't even remember what was supposed to finish us off then.

the world is going to end when my consultant figures out what's going on with me :P

The World ending is determined by God, so mankind will keep guessing and get it wrong. Just livng life occupies my time the rest I leave to a loving God.
