sorry need a good moan

Hi

I dont know if any of you can help, i am usually a happy go lucky person, but the last few weeks i have felt so depressed and been really irratible, i am fed up with feeling unwell and not being able to do all the things that my friends can do, bless them i dont think they realise how much my asthma effects me on a day to day basis.

I was of pred for four weeks, now back on it. I am not sure how much pred effects your mood but it seems to turn me in to an emotional mess.

I am sorry for having a moan!!

lol

Sarah sorry to hear you are down. Pred is evil drug that is responsible for every possible side effect known to man and woman mood swings or in some people feeling down is one of the more common ones!

Hi Sarah,

I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling and feeling so down. It is really hard, I know, when your asthma is limiting you and you're struggling to do the things that your friends take for granted.

Pred is well known for affecting your mood, and it can do anything from just making you feel a bit tearful and over-emotional to occasionally causing a severe depression. Hopefully you'll find that as you get the dose of pred down, things will improve.

I would suggest that you go and see your GP and discuss how you are feeling, though. It is very normal and natural to feel low when you're on steroids and struggling with a serious illness, but that doesn't mean that you wouldn't benefit from help for the way you are feeling. Your GP will be able to make a proper assessment of your mood and decide with you whether there is anything they can do to help.

Do keep talking to us on here - you're not alone with this, there are a lot of people here who understand what you are going through.

Take care

Em H

Hi Sarah 07, sorry to hear youre feeling down. Just wanted to add that as Em H says go and see your GP, I got very down with my asthma and eczema quite a few years ago and my GP put me on a 6 months supply of antidepresants. I felt foolish at first for having to take them, but after a couple of weeks began to feel brighter and the worse of the dpressive symptoms did lift. After 6 months I had them reduced gradually and havent needed them since.

I think we all get really down with just having asthma, without the lovely Pred. It is difficult for our friends to realise just how each day can be different at times and that sometimes it is hard to keep up with them.

I am quite a bit older than you I think and the things that I've found that help are finding things to do at home that don't require too much exertion, reading obviously (when you can concentrate) I like to be productive (I was an OT briefly) and so I sew, sometimes alter clothes I've got fed up with or that need fixing. I make kitchen chair covers or do bits of embroidery, just something with bright colours to take your mind off your breathing if you can. I enjoy yoga and the relaxation part is great when I'm ill. I just lie on the floor with blanket and extra socks and put on a relaxation tape, sometimes its so good when the tape finishes and I come back to reality I feel i've been on a little holiday.

Hope this doesn't sound too crazy - if it does blame the years of medication...

Do something you enjoy,

love Sandi x

Hi Sarah,

I am sorry to hear your so down. I agree with the other comments. Go back to the doctor, dont accept this. Asthmatics should be able to do all the things other people do & if they cannot they are not controlled. Asthmatics deserve better.

Maybe we should organise a demo to London to highlight the situation and maybe then more money will be put in to asthma care.

Don't forget to talk to your asthma nurse as well.

Best wishes
