Costa is derived from a jokey name for Hospital - Costa Del NHS - a place were some of us have spent too much time in! Taken from Costa Del Sol.

Nowt to do with Costa Coffee shops.......

Kate

Don't you mean Costa Lot coffee shops, Kate? ;)

cos-ta [kas-ta]

- noun, plural costas

hospital, an institution in which sick or injured people are given medical or surgical treatment

[origin: from Costa del NHS, as in “…am currently holidaying in the Costa del NHS…” – unknown board user, Asthma UK discussion forums, c. 2003]

see also costafied, costafication, decostafication

I should have been a lexicographer!

Cathy darn you you have found my guilty secret I am actually simply getting a coffee.

Bex

My guilty secret also revealed - I have not been working these years, but simply drinking coffee...:)

Thanks!!

Going back through the archives of the old message board, the earliest reference on Camping to the ""Costa del NHS"" was made on the 17th September 2003 by our very own Hopalongkp!

Does this mean that it celebrates its 4th birthday in five days time?!

Now we know where costa comes from, does anyone know who first used the word splat and when?

wow . What a claim to fame!!

Mind you im quite chuffed that it has stuck makes me feel like i do something worthwhile ocasionally

I have a feeling 'splat' might be a Bex-ism - certainly the slightly less severe 'wee splatette' is one of her classics, I think.

I can't get the search facility to work, at the moment, but I *think* I can take credit for 'decostafication'...

You certainly can, Em - first used by yourself on the 22nd July 2006!

Woohoo! Fame at last!
