Pleural rub.

Hi everyone, I'm a new member of Asthma uk, but a lifetime Asthmatic!. I've got severe, brittle Asthma and am on the full range of meds. I'm 33, married and have an 11 yr old son. Usually I can cope OK-ish, with the bad chests, infections and a bit of chest pain, but I've now got a BAD chest infection, and have got a severe pleural rub on my left lung. It's very painful, but I can't just lie propped up in bed, as I'm on my own during the day until my son comes home from school. Has anyone got any ideas of coping with the pain?. The GP gave me 2 lots of antibiotics yesterday & some co-codamol. These make me feel a bit sicky & spaced out! Any advice please? Thanks!. Sue.

Hi Suzanne,

Welcome to AUK Boards

I am brittle asthmatic too, just down the next county from you, in Essex.

I get pleural pains too especially when I have an infection of a bad attack. I have tried warmth such as wheat bags or Glucosamine gel to try to help.

It is horrible because you can't get away from the pain.

I occasionally take a very strong pain killer called Tramadol which zonkes me out a bit but doesn't make me feel sicky.

Co-Dydramol is another smilar one to co-codamol which may be less sicky making!

Try the heat method, plus you may get used to the co-codamol. Although beware of codein based painkillers because they can constipate as well!

Hop over to the camping2 thread for general chat if you want - there are a load of us brittles there!

Take care

Kate

Us Brittles.

Thanks Kate, good to hear from a fellow 'Brittle'! There didn't seem to be many of us, until I looked here!! Thanks for the advice about Pleural pain. I've tried Tramadol before, it was given to me by my chest consultant. A DR at my GP's surgery gave me the Co-Codamol yesterday. I think I'll try and weather it out with 1 painkiller, until Monday, then ask for Tramodal if the pain hasn't eased.(Got to go bk to DR's on Mon for blood test anyway, as 1 of the anti-biotics can affect the theophyallin levels)

Will talk again, love Sue.

Hi Sue, Hoping that I am correct in thinking who u r!!! could be a coincidence. I agree with Kate over the heat method as it might help ease the pain - keep up the resting.

Come over to camping and get to know a few others as well, they are all friendly and always around to give advice.

love Ems

Pleural rubs are asscociated to *Pleurisy* and aint half painfull !!

At one point when I had pleurisy I was taken in to be given IM painkillers !!

But the heat advice is best thing !!

Try everything before taking strong painkillers as don't forget the painkillers can affect your chest too !!

The best painkiller I have found (I allergic to Tramadol) is Temsgesic (Buprenorphine) its the strongest one my gp will prescirbe at home for me now as when I was taking mst and oramorph at home I had serious problems with my chest but the pain was a bigger problem then than my chest so it was lesser of two evils !!

Gentle hugs Sue and take care !!

I try to only take DF118's nowadays with paracetamol and a cuppa coffee (the caffeine boosts the painkillers) !!

Oh even though it may hurt don't forget to breathe properly !!

I was almost shot when I was in for not breathing properly and when I said it hurt too much the cons on ward said well it will hurt less if you breath properly !!

Didn't seem too to me but my chest did feel less tight!!

pleural rub

Have just come out of hosp after an overnight stay. Hacking cough and agonising pain in right side. Have had this before in my left side- feels as if a lion has bitten a huge chunk out of me- and it is agony when I cough but painful on any movement. Am sleeping propped up on 5 pillows at present. Can only just get from room to room before gasping for breath. The thing is no-one has ever mentioned pleural rub. Hosp and GP both just say ribs strained with coughing. Hosp gave me codeine linctus which I won`t take as I know there`s gunge that needs to come up.Do you think this is pleural rub ?
