steriod induced diabetes

Only just out of hospital after a week and am steriod dependant and have been for ages. Now it seems I may have diabetes. The initial test did not reveal it but I have another test to have-glucose test as my blood sugars are very up and down. Anyone else have any experience of this?

I have steroid induced diabetes. My blood sugars are fine if I'm on less than 20mg of prednisolone. If I'm on high doses of prednisolon though, my blood sugars become very high. They are not treating it at the moment as I am managing to stay on low doses of pred. I am a bit concerned it might become permanent though as my mum and grandad both have diabetes and are not on steroids so I obviously have a family tendency towards developing it.

I have problems with blood sugars from Pred or Hydro but for some reason it only happens for 6 - 8 hrs after taking a dose of Pred or of IV Hydro !!

But when my blood sugar levels dip badly and luckily I tend to get sugar cravings when my levels are low !!

There is also a late-onset diabetes in my dads side of the family so gp/cons monitors me periodically got problems !!

reply to all your replies re: steriod induced diabetes

Hi and thanks for all your posts

Obviously not just me then! Theres diabetes on my mothers side a way back but thats it. Hard to know if its the pred or the weight due to pred or both-lol!!!

I bought a monitor for my own piece of mind, and apparently once I am diagnosed officially needles etc...are on prescription. At the momenet only controlled by diet so hence why I bought a monitot to check I was ok really and winning the war on the diet side of things. I am on 30 mg pred at the mo and that will be now until next month when I see consultant and try to reduce yet again...but cannot get below 15mg pred...hmm. My higher readings were mainly after lunch and in the evenings when I was in hospital-before dietary changes. now changes have been made they are coming down a bit.

I've had steroid induced diabetes for 2 years now, have been on long term pred for 4 tears never lower than 20mgs. Theres no one in my family with it, i started treatment on 1 tablet a day and am now on 3 aswell as insulin 4 times, they still hope that if i ever get off the steroids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it may go away but if it does i more than likely to get it again when im older.

My surgers are ok in a morning but rise sharply by tea because of the pred, if i took pred at nite ams would be higher.

You need to be monitored coz it can get out of control fairly quickly.

Steroid Induced Diabetes

I have a very high blood sugar every time i am on a long term course of steroids and I was told i could have Diabetes. Help!!!!

When you say very high, how high are you talking about?

I have diabetes caused by the steroids in my inhalers, and the only difference that it has made to me is that I now have even more pills to take; and now I rattle more as a result. ;oD

hi me too....kind of

I was diagnosed with type two in July but as my father is Diabetic as well I never considered that my asthma meds could affect blood sugar(symbicort + ventolin)

To be honest I'm not sure that it has for me as I only developed asthma 1 year ago and I probably have had undiagnosed type 2 diabetes for 3+ years. I saw my asthma consultant yesterday who said that Diabetes is ''the mother of all diseases'' so it probably is the other way round for me.........goodness only knows!!! My consultant also wants me to take 1 full month off work to see if my occupatation is a trigger, as I regularly work with acrylic nail systems and powder bleach etc. Which will have to be unpaid as I used up all my sickleave in January when I was so poorly.

One thing I do know is that the link between asthma steroids and increased blood sugar will not help my Diabetes.... Forgive me for waffling its just that in the past year I have developed Asthma & been diagnosed with Diabetes, two conditions which I thought were mutually exclusive.

Drummer girl - what levels do you call high- as someone who has had a number of admissions due to very high blood sugars (DKA) i presume it cant be that high or you would be in costa especially at your age

grafxart - i was told by my diabetes nurse that inhaled steroids dont contribute towards developing diabetes only steroid tablets.

Cici- if there is a family history there is a possibility you may have type 1 - have u been put on insulin?

also its highly unlikely u have developer it due to inhalers as u havent been on them and also for the reason mentioned above. - if u have any q's pls message me.

Hi hopalong

Just replying to what you put about Graxart, he has an allergy to steriods, so i think that is why. I know also like you, you cannot get it from inhalers - i think it just coz he is a special case asthmatic so the allergy will have contributed esp if it was unknown for years. (allergies do weird things when you keep putting it in the body) (not medical person but have had un known allergies do weird and wonderful to me in the past so know it is not totally unpossible)

HOpe that clears that up a little.

(sorry no knowledge on actually diabetes not got that thankfully)

Plumie

Plumie :- as far as i know (having done heaps of research and spoken to many diabetics(steroid + non steroid induced) and diabetic professionals that diabetes is NOT caused by allergies. It is either lifestyle triggered (inc steroids) , genetic or sometimes auto immune.

I would be very interested to see how it can be caused by an allergy to something(i also have many many allergies some anaphalactic)if you find any proof to this effect please could u let me know.

My father is a type 1 diabetic, I was IDD during my pregnacy I am amazed I have got away with it so far. I have had the odd high few 14 ish but as a rule manage to keep below 10.

Hi asm1006 and everybody else!

I've been on steroids for about 16 months now mostly 35-40mg and was diagnosed with diabetes in Feb/March this year. My sugars were high (high 20's-30's) consistently and I was quite poorly when diagnosed so started on tablets and went to insulin quite quickly. To cut a long story short it's been a huge learning curve, but I'm coping ok with it. I'm now on x4 insulin injections a day and tablets twice daily for the diabetes- the prednisolone does make my blood sugars unpredictable and a ""challenge"" to manage and inevitably they are still higher in the evenings as the steroids have kicked in by then, but I'm lucky and have excellent support from the diabetes nurse specialists/team at my local hospital and my GP is great.

I hope things settle down for you- don't despair, things will settle down and hopefully you will feel much better soon!

Good luck

Fi

Hi there all !

I have Diabetes (since 15 months old) & developed Asthma 5 years ago. I have to say the only thing I notice with them both is when I had 2 short courses of Oral Steriods (bad cough/cold & lead to Asthma attack) my Sugar levels went up to 30 & I could only get them as low as 11.

I've never noticed a Steriod inhaler affecting my sugars though, thankfully.

Good luck,

Claireb
