I am curios what is it? I know cardiac is heart but i dont know rest of it? Apart from it sounds like the word blast so i would phenically take it as heart blast, so with air of something that sees how much the different parts are working, this is a total guess!

How far right or wrong am i?

Cardiac ablation involves burning out by laser or heat bits of the heart muscle that are involved with the heart beat & rate to stop it miss behaving. the heart has a natural pace maker and sometimes bits of it can go wrong and cause arythmias etc. I think the specific muscles are called purkinje fibres / bundle?? The lasery bits are inserted via the femoral artery and threaded towards the heart. Lots of special imagery involved too.

By knocking out these bits the heart rythmn hopefully returns to normal.

........ I think that is it Hops??? and Plumie!

well done Kate u get an A!!

basically burning of naughty bits of heart!! I was under GA for 4 hrs for this last wed and its hasnt been very successful basically my heat rate can shoot up to about 170 with no trigger ( i range from about 45 upwards!!230 post salbutamol nebs so am limited to amount im allowed now)I get severe palpitations feel dizzy and black out. also my sister died of sudden adult death syndrome and i am classed as high risk as ventricular tachycardia can be fatal. For me they went in the sub clavian artery(under the collar bone) as couldnt do femoral as have a filter in my vena cave so the heart couldn't be accessed.

But since the procedure i have felt quite unwell and had no relief from symptoms(looks like i will be getting an internal defibrillator)and also had chest pains having to be reviewd daily by GP and basically housebound so rather fed up!!

A relative of mine had an ablation done for atrial fibrillation - slightly different to VT, but cardiac all the same. He came from the anaesthetic and promptly went back in to AF again - it was only after a day or so, with a combination of various drugs, such as Amioderone, that the fibrillation stopped - and fingers crossed he has been ok since!

I hope they find some way of easing your symptoms, it may be a case of toying with meds too perhaps.

And Kate - purkinje fibres is correct, as I think would be Bundle of His, definately an A!

Good luck hops!

The drs did say that it hadnt worked totally but symptoms should have eased as they had destroyed 1 area of naughtiness. Unfortunately i cant have any of the suitable meds due to the nature of my asthma plus various drug allergies.

It is looking more likely that i will have an internal defibrillator put in i just hope that after i have itr done(if) that i dont feel as pants as i have done this week.

hi thanks for explaining, now i understand but what does internal fib........ thing mean? I am curious.

an internal defibrillator does the same thing as the drs do when they put the pads on people and say clear. except it is the size of a pager and implanted under the skin.

Is that the same as a pacemaker, just another name for it?

So it gives the heart jalts to get it to run at the correct pace? Sounds a clever little device!

from what i have been told a pace maker can only treat a slow heart rate whereas this does both slow and too fast and also can do something else but cant remember what. And generally the cardiac problem causing the need for this is usually more complex
