Hi Lis, how are you doing?

Many thanks for the vaccine link (no, I didn't read about this in the UK press).

The research is very interesting. I'm not sure about the long term benefits/down-side of giving immuno-therapy to babies and infants, even if the vaccine is taken orally.

Babies and infants have an under-developed/developing (depending on the way you look at it) immune system and to in some way interfere/modify/manipulate the babies immunological mechanisms could have serious long term positive/negative impact on the way the immune system will respond in the future to many different types of allergens, not just the ones included in the vaccine. In theory, the vaccine could induce further immune system dysfunction, but I am not knowledgeable enough to comment on this.

Giving this type of treatment to babies strongly suggests that the baby is atopic (inherited the genetic propensity to produce IgE antibodies to environmental allergens) and therefore the benefits could be very limited. You see, the ability to produce elevated levels of IgE in response to specific allergens is not inherited, it is only the ability to have allergic reactions that can be inherited (which happens at cellular level).

As Mia stated on the old boards, future research needs to focus on epigenetics to design out the allergy/asthma trait (at cellular level).

Many atopics go on to become multiple symptom allergics (or multiple reactors) and I don't think they (the researchers) will be able to produce a vaccine to offer protection against all possible biological and chemical allergens.

But never the less, it will be interesting to see how the vaccine trials progress and to see if it indeed becomes a successful treatment for allergy/asthma.

Take care,

Derek
