HELP! Medical evidence between asthma and clouds of cement dust?

We live in the Spanish city of Alicante, on the Med. There is currently a local protest because the Port Authority has started operations to extend the Port (parallel to the city, at some 600m from the residential zones) and is trying to convert it into an industrial estate. They are unloading cement dust in the open air, causing huge clouds of dust which the wind brings into the nearest 4 neighbourhoods of the city, filling homes, balconies, schools and parks with cement dust. The Port tells the residents that there is no health risk and denies that there are any clouds of dust, saying environmental control is ""rigorous"". But look at the video on YouTube (it is shocking from the 3 minutes stage):

We have local residents complaining of asthma - but I would like to know if there are scientific studies to back this up, and if so if there is any international asthma society we can get to put a stop to this.

In the meantime, we have reported the activity to the health authorities and the police, and the more people viewing the Youtube clip, the more public pressure there will be. Please pass the Youtube link on to environmentally concerned friends and colleagues. Many thanks, IPHarri

As this message is clearly a cut-and-paste of the other one you posted (you've left copies of the buttons under the post!), I have deleted the other thread - as per the T&Cs.

Hi IPHarri,

I don't have the energy to do the research for you today, but if you go to ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entr... and put in 'asthma cement' it returns 34 citations, of which about a third look relevent, scanning the abstracts briefly.

If I'm feeling better tomorrow I'll see if I can pull the papers for you and summarise them - you might want to PM me your e-mail address. It does depend on how I'm feeling, but I'll do my best.

Thanks Peaksteve - I wasn't sure if the general forum or the medical forum was the best place for my message, but I guess the more specialised, the better. I will look into the very kind advice I have researched to try to see how strong the medical evidence is, and whether it can help to control the Spanish port authority here - we have many residentes complaining of asthma on the days that the unloading of the cement dust takes place, and it is an urgent matter for us to sort out.

I'm coming to Alicante (well Mercia) on the 1st December to stay with the inlaws for 4 days!!

We grew up across from Rugby Cement works. (about 2 fields across the way) I live in a small village called Stockton in Warwickshire. They've actually closed it down now and moved the works to Rugby. Some days it was so bad my dads car was covered in a thin layer of dust. There was always speculation that the cement works had caused asthma within the surrounding villages. My twin brother & i were quite often left out in the back garden, to get some fresh air, while we were asleep in our pram. Although my brother doesn't like to admit it, he his asthmatic. No evidence that this is the case but its still interesting.
