Are LABA's any good?

Hello!

I've recently been diagnosed with asthma and am currently on inhaled steroids and my trusty blue reliever. The inhaled steroids are doing their job pretty well and I am rarely having to use my blue inhaler, which is an improvement on before when I was using it 7-8 times a day, thus having run ins with the Ventolin shakes and a fast heartrate (83 bpm my heart rate is normally 65bpm).

However despite the effectiveness of the steroid, my asthma is significantly worse when I play sport, I tale my reliever before I play and I still need to use it 3 or 4 times just to get my lungs back under control. My doctor has said that she will consider putting me on LABA's especially for days that I play sport. My question really is do any of you have any experience with them and if so do they work?

The whole thing is really getting me down because I love sport and I am the womens football captain so I really can't just quit. That plus the fact that my step mother seems to think I have asthma for ""attention"" and tried to challenge me to a cough-off, which when in contact with her stupid duck down cushions my lungs rose to the challenge and showed her exactly what a cough was.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi there. I've been getting to grips with asthma for almost a year and LABA made a big difference to my ability to do the sport I love, cycling. Tried serevent on top of clenil for a couple of weeks and was amazed, then went on to seretide which is combined steroid & LABA and that seems to work fine.

I still also take 2 puffs of reliever before sport and this also helps.

If your dr thinks you should try LABA then why not? It might help. If not there are some other things you can try.

Thanks, so much! I think I may try it, if it does make a difference then I'll give at a go. I'm glad that it is working for you.

:-) Good luck with it.

I should add, you might have a week or so of shakes and raised heartrate. I did, but it settled down quickly.

Ok thanks for the warning, I'll keep it in mind incase I panic whilst I'm on them, I see my doctor next week so I will let her know that I want to give them a try. Thanks so much for your help.
