Sudafed?

7 Replies

Being an asthmatic can i take sudafed. I suffer from ear infections, have an appointment with the ENT consultant on the 5th March. My ears are blocked & normally clear it with Sudafed.

I've read that you can't take it. Is this true?

Thanks

Julie

Sudafed is the only thing which helps my ears. I can't take it if it makes my asthma worse as i have just got over a chest infection.

Any information will be much appreciated as my head is about to explode!!!!

I'm sure i read on hear you can't take it

Please help

Thanks

Im a brittle asthamtic and it was my asthma team that put me on the basic sudafed tablets as I reacted to steroid nasal sprays -- U nee to check with you asthma care people as no-one here is qualified to tell you if it is definitely ok for you as we dont know your medical history!

But I found I had sinus issues that made my chest worse BUT with sudafed tablets things stay at a ""steadily unstable level"" instead of constant hospital and ITU admissions!

If you type sudafed into the search box it does bring up a couple of the previous threads. Other than that, maybe you could call one of the AUK nurses?

If Netdoctor is to be believed, there should be no problem with Sudafed and asthma:

netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/1...

More specifically:

""Use with caution in

* Heart disease

* High blood pressure (hypertension)

* Overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism)

* Diabetes

* Enlarged prostate gland (prostatic hypertrophy)

* Decreased kidney function

* Raised pressure in the eye (intraocular pressure), eg glaucoma.

Not to be used in

* Children under 12 years of age

* Pregnancy

* People who have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) antidepressant (eg phenelzine, isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine or moclobemide) in the last 14 days.""

No mention of asthma. Of course, first port of call should be the patient information leaflet that you can find in every pack of Sudafed.

You could ask your pharmacist. they should know contra-indications

Thanks for your replies. I had to take one today. My ears were so painful & kept popping.

I've got a check up with my asthma nurse on friday so i will have a chat to her about it.

Thanks again

I swear by sudafed cos my sinuses and ears are often blocked.

Can't say it's interfered with my chest though

but I believe some Sudafed contains ASPARTAME and also YELLOW colouring in the ingredients which can disagree with some people.
