Welcome to AUK, Conehead.

I hope you will find us a welcoming and friendly bunch (I couldn't possibly comment on the alleged insanity quotient) and the boards a rich source of information on pretty much every aspect of living with asthma.

One thing that I like to say to all new members - I don't know how severe your asthma is (I'm guessing from your purchase of a nebuliser that you are at the more severe end of the spectrum) but it's worth bearing in mind that the board naturally attracts a disproportionate number of people who are very severely affected by the condition. In the past, new members have occasionally been put off posting or even frightened by talk of ambulances, hospital admissions and Intensive Care admissions. It may be that these things are part of your own asthmatic experience, but if they are not, please don't worry - it is a tiny minority of asthmatics who have these sorts of experiences. Most people with asthma can be well controlled and lead normal lives. This board is for everyone who is affected by asthma, however mild or severe, but naturally those of us who are more severely affected tend to hang out here more often!

Please feel free to ask about anything that you are not sure about; we have a lot of experienced 'professional' asthmatics on the board who are just waiting to spring into action to answer any queries you might have. (As per the Terms and Conditions, we obviously can't give you specific medical advice, as it wouldn't be safe to do so).

As Becky says, do hop over to Camping in the General Forum and pitch your tent - it's our socialising and general chit chat thread, so you can get to know us all a bit better there.

As for the Omron MicroAir - the iPod nano of the asthmatic world! I'm envious! I have an older Omron, the U22, which is *quite* small but nothing compared to the tininess of the MicroAir. The U22 also has what can only be described as 'mesh issues'. I've had mine for some years so it definitely needs updating... will have to speak nicely to my hubby and persuade him to buy me one of the little beauties! (Okay, I admit it, I am a little bit of a sad geek - technology excites me).

Hope you find this a useful site and settle in and get to know everyone... as I said, any questions, just ask.

Take care

Em H

Welcome from one of the aforesaid ""moderates"". We're all in it together though and this is truly a great place to share.

Handshakes from Kensington.

Firstly an apology for the time taken to respond, haven`t been too well this last few days but much better now, secondly thanks for the warm welcome you seem like a freindly lot here.

A little about myself then.

I am sure i am older than most on here at 56,i am a happily married man with 2 lovely daughters and 2 even lovelier grandchildren aged 2 and 13 months.

I suffered badly with childhood asthma up till about the age of 15 when i became completely sympton free to the extent that i had a full career in the military, however after retiring at around the age of 39 asthma made a very unwelcome and severe return it was completely out of the blue and made a tremendously negative impact on not just my life but the whole family.

I have type 2 brittle asthma and Currently I take the usual tranche of medicines

ie 15mg prednisolone daily, frequently rising to anywhere between 60-100mg

12.5mg Methotrexate weekly,

5mg Salbutamol and 500 mcg Atrovent nebulised as req approx 6-8 times a day.

20 mg Montelucast nightly,

600mg Uniphyllin

Flixotide 500

Serevent

Alendronic acid

Calcichew

Home Oxygen

Spiriva

Probably missed some but there you are.

I hate that this sounds like a sob story cos believe me it isn`t but my life is limited severely by asthma but hey there are worse off,i hope this gives you a little understanding about me so once again thanks for the warm welcome i look forward to learning from people on here and wish everyone all the best.

Hello Conehead!

Thanks for the intro. Your drug list will be very familiar to a few of us here! ( similar to mine but in smaller dosages as I am a small person!)

I have type 1 & 2 Brittle asthma just to be different! Sounds like you have had a rough time of it. Hope the grand kids bring some happiness into your life. My sisters two kids one nearly 3 and one 16 months are great and really cheer me up but can be a little tireing! I hope you don't mind me asking, did your millitary career ever take you to the Falklands or Ascension Island? Have been to both, wildlife watching and going back in October.

Anyway,

Take care
