Bricanyl inhalers

Hi

I've just been to the chemist to collect my repeat prescription and have been told that Bricanyl inhalers have been discontinued. I find they work better than Salbutamol inhalers - does anyone know of an alternative?

Thanks Sarah

Bricanyl MDI inhalers have been dicontinued, certainly - no-one's told us that the Bricanyl turbohalers have gone, and as far as I know (getting updates through the post as I do) there are no plans to do so. So - the turbohaler would be your alternative, unless you don't get on with dry powder inhalers.

Hi Cathbear

It is the turbohaler that I have and that they have said are discontinued! Am confused............

That's very very odd. I will have a word with our friendly next-door pharmacist tomorrow and let you know what they say. As I say, though, I get regular updates regarding this kind of thing and I haven't had anything regarding Bricanyl - just the stuff about beclomethasone inhalers and Combivent inhalers.

Thanks Cathbear

I'm trying to get hold of my resp nurse at the hospital but would be glad to hear from your pharmacist!

Dropped my script off today and no problems... *is worried*

Hi

My son has had a 24hr subcutaneous infusion of Bricanyl for the las 10 months and as far as I am aware as from the consultation last thursday, I was told that you could not get a inhaler.... I would be cross if you could as my poor 10 year old as carried a syringe driver around with him for the last 10 months.....

You can definately get bricanyl as an inhaler, its made by the drug company astra zeneca. . .

The only bricanyl medication to be stopped in the last year or so is the bricanyl MDI aerosol inhaler as astra zeneca were unable to find a CFC free replacement for the propellant.

You can still get the Bricanyl turbohaler, the power breath actuated inhaler, the nebuliser solution (respules) and the 1ml & the 5ml Bricanyl ampoules for infusions.

Beverly, I assume your son was given the s/c infusion as everything else wasn't working, not because your consultant told you there wasn't an inhaler?

Kate

As far as I am aware the situation is exactly as Kate has said. Certainly the Astra Zeneca website doesn't say anything different (astrazeneca.com/productbrow.... Terbutaline is also available as various oral preparations - tablets and granules.

Occasionally there may be local supply problems which can prevent particular pharmacies from getting stocks for a while - if this is the case, you will be offered a suitable alternative in consultation with your GP and pharmacist. You can minimise the effects of such supply problems by making sure that you always keep a couple of spares so that you can manage for a while without a new supply.

The subcut infusion is certainly not used as a substitute for an inhaler - most centres use it as a last resort to try to control difficult asthma when other medication, including high dose (usually nebulised) beta agonists such as salbutamol or terbutaline, have been unsuccessful in controlling symptoms.

Hope this helps
