after watching my brother and my mum set up her kindle that doesn't have a keyboard i'd suggest you do get the keyboard version.

My brother (the computer geek) said to set it up for wi-fi there's a string of 60 chraracters mixture of numbers / letters (upper & lower case) & symbols - apparently it's an absolute nightmare to do without a keyboard.

Also if you're going to take it places i'd recommend you get some kind of cover for it to protect the screen from getting scratched.

thanx!!! is there any catch with the whole 3g thing? i dont understand how you dont have a monthly contract, yet with any other 3g purchase, theres a monthly charge!?

x

i don't know about the 3g thing - we've just got mum's kindle hooked up to our home wi-fi network

I was just really commenting on keyboard -v- no keyboard

I have a WiFi keyboard Kindle. The 3G is quite a bit more expensive and just means you can download books anywhere there's mobile reception (there is no ongoing charge for this functionality): I personally can't see the point, since I just make sure I've bought/downloaded the books I want before I go somewhere without WiFi. The newer, non-keyboard versions have a smaller capacity and battery life, too. Re. the 60-character WiFi password - that is only if the network has been set to have such a long password: most are much shorter so that needn't be too much of a consideration. Day-to-day I don't use the actual keyboard but it is handy for initial setup and can be used for password protecting access to the Kindle. Capacity, battery life and the need/desire for a keyboard will be what you need to prioritise when making your choice.

do you actually need the keyboard for anything else? as the 3g thing seems pretty usless as you say as I could just use the wifi!!

thanks for your help!!

I got bought a Kindle with keyboard & wifi so the older version when off sick for several weeks post ENT surgery earlier this year. It is brilliant with excellent battery life as long as the wifi is turned off. Don't see the need for 3G myself as load it up at home or anywhere with free wifi.

It does cost more but has double the storage (2 vs 4 GB) & battery life. With the keyboard you can add notes & highlight sections & have a password. You can store other documents on it too. It syncs with your amazon account & e.g. kindle app on the iphone if you have one.

I have a Kindle with 3G. I originally bought the cheaper wifi version thinking I would just download to my pc and then transfer books with a usb lead. Once I had it, however, I was really disappointed as I couldn't adjust any of the settings as we don't have wireless connection at home. I did park up in a local park with wifi hotspots, but couldn't get it to work properly. I took it back to John Lewis where I bought it and explained. They were brilliant and let me exchange it for the 3G version (and extra £50 or so) and I haven't looked back. Recently I have even used it to access the internet - which you would find the keyboard useful for). It is a bit slow, but in some situations will do.

Happy decision making!

I want a kindle real bad! Looking at these as I can get more books that I need here rather than Waterstones/Smiths etc. With me wanting books from Amazon has it got to be the kindle? I aren't very up with the techno stuff. Only recently introduced myself to the world of ipod. So I'm after one purely for Amazon just thinking it would be easier with kindle. All I want to do with it is plug it in and download at home! Which would I need? Don't get the Wifi stuff on the move or the 3G thing! Oh dear what a techno phobe I am!

@emlou: If you're primarily interested in reading ebooks bought from Amazon, then yes the Kindle is the one to go for.

There are ways of converting books bought from different places into Kindle format or vice versa (Calibre is the best software for doi

Brilliant! Thanks for that! Sorry for hi-jacking you thread charlie-warlie :)

WAIT! Don't get a kindle just yet!!! I was wondering exactly the same thing yesterday, when someone told me about the Kindle fire! I'm going to wait for that to come out, google it :D

Lol emlou, no worries, your not hi jacking, here to help all! And thanks clare22 i will have a browse at that one now!

Thanks to all for your amazing advice!

Hiya,

I have just purchased a Kobo. Does the same thing but has a few exta features and a touch screen, around the same price.

Lisa

Loving all the Kindle discussions! I don't actually have one(!) but I am in the e-publishing business so always nice to hear of lots of people buying Kindles and Kobos and becoming potential customers lol.

Just to throw things into the mix, I have an iPad 1 (we decided we needed one of each sort of reader in the company so we can see what they're like to read on) and while I don't think it's the same for reading as the Kindle - too much distraction, and backlit screen not great after a while - I do read stuff, including Kindle books, on it and it's really not bad. Obviously much more expensive but if anyone was having gadget lust for one and happened to be wondering about that side of things I can tell you it's not bad.

Also, it starts conversations with strangers! On public transport! In Britain! It may actually be a miracle device...

Anyway sorry for hijacking as well Charlie Warlie, just couldn't resist the Kindle discussion lol.

Lol philomela, no worries, all these choice are making it so much harder oops! Especially as i want an ipad also :-D

I have a 3G Kindle with the keyboard. I wanted 3G because I don't have access to a reliable wi-fi connection and I wanted to be able to download books from anywhere (I'm terrified that I'll run out and have nothing to read!). The Keyboard is useful for making notes, accessing the internet etc. and also makes it easy to organise your book collection into folders - unread / read, by author, subject or genre. Mine are mostly arranged by author for books I know I'll read again but I've got a 'bin' into which I chuck books I've read but am not sure I'll read again.

You might be able to try some out if you go to somewhere like John Lewis, to see what suits you.

Once you have the Kindle you'll be able to download a reader onto your computer, I Pad and, I believe, your I phone (Not sure about this, I have a Blackberry), so you might feel that the keyboard is surplus to requirements.

Finally, the advice to get a cover is sound. I've only dropped mine once (eek!) but I'd bought a cover which took the force of the fall and the Kindle wasn't hurt.

Good luck with making your decision.

Annista's post made me realise - you can get the KIndle app on things even when you have no Kindle. On the other hand, you may not want to read on your phone...

i have the kindle app on my phone, but it is only a samsung galaxy s so its rather small to read off!!
