Complete pain. Noticed people smoking a lot when I was in Berlin, yuk...
Greece is one of the worst places - the concept of 'no-smoking' seems to be completely alien! Also Switzerland - got followed around by smokers in the hotel we stayed in, every time we thought we'd escaped they came in and lit up!
i live in France, and altohugh there is quite a good ""no smoking in public"" law, there are so many smokers around that you just cant escape it: at the bus stop, in the streets, in and out of public buildings, shops, etc...
Oh you surprise me Gussypoo, sort of assumed that European Countries had similar no smoking policies to us!
I went to Italy recently and had exactly the same thought as you- that our No smoking policy is so much better in the UK. In Italy there was no smoking in hotels, restaurants or on trains, but people did smoke on the station platforms and there were a lot more smokers on the streets.
I wish smoking in the street here would be banned too - confine it to people's own homes and gardens if they must do it. I have to regularly run the gauntlett of smokers outside not just my office building but almost every office and shop building in the city centre (Birmingham) and then you have to avoid those walking along not paying attention to where their smoke or ash goes. If following someone smoking along the pavement I'll often just stop or deliberately go another way to avoid their 2nd hand smoke, its horrible, even for those without asthma I would imagine.

What do people think about this proposed ban on smoking in cars? It's good in theory, but practically how would the police enforce this law? It's interesting but I can't see it happening.
I think it's a step too far and people wouldn't stand for it. Look at the fuss when the ban on somking in public places was proposed. This would be different in that the objective would be to stop people smoking in their own personal space - their car. The logical next step would be to stop people smoking in their homes. I can just imagine the uproar!
