Deciding that I deserved a treat today I bought myself a tube of real Smarties to counteract the current overdosing of little red smarties. Well... I haven't had them since I was a kid - what happened???
No plastic lid with a letter (what was the purpose of them and did anyone ever get the whole alphabet?)
The colours had all gone wishy-washy - I feel cheated of my E-Numbers!!!
I know exactly what you mean! I was shocked when I last brought Smarties that the nice tube and plastic lid had gone. I used to collect the lids and play with them (as a child!) but never got the whole alphabet. Still enjoy the actual smarties tho'!!
Ratty, what a disaster! We used to play with the little plastic lids for hours, and my sons used to use the tubes as cannons to shoot the lids across the room. The important thing is, did the smarties still taste the same?

Oh no! There was really something about the lids and the tubes - I used to love playing with them. That design must have lasted for a while, and can't have gone that long ago - a friend at university collected the lids and we played Scrabble/poker and various other things with them. That was about 5-6 years ago.
I hope they were more enjoyable than the other kind though (never had the pleasure of that sort luckily, and I'd like to keep it that way).
the tubes and lids must've changed about 2-3 years ago when they brought back the blue smarties
has to be said, they deffinatly aren't as good as the old ones!!
Ha smarties, I don't like the red ones, the colouring comes from some kind of beetle. Yuck!
smarties have gone down hill since they took the e numbers away. Im just glad skittles havent taken the e numbers away
Found them very disappointing too.
Don't eat smarties anymore because they are made by Nestle..........
I used to like them when I was little... Traidcraft (fairtrade peeps) do some of their own chocolate bean things - very yummy!
