Favourite things about/symbols of Christmas - what are yours?

18 Replies

I know this might not be everyone's favourite time of year but

I was wondering what would your top 6 things be?

Not sure I could pin it down but off the top of my head, I would say

* Dark choc any time of day - has to be dark preferably Green & Blacks or Hotel Choc

* Christmas tree & decorations esp. glittery baubles with nicely wrapped presents under

* Snowman

* Candles

* Fruit cake

* Carols/christmassy music

I love Christmassy things! My dad never did which kind of helps for my first Christmas without him, though of course wish he were still around to be Scrooge-like.

*Chocolate - yes, with you 100%, dark chocolate, and lots of it. Especially associate orangey things with Christmas as well, think it's clementines in the stockings.

*Also agree on Christmas tree - getting out all the special decorations, and the smell of pine.

*Candles yep, and the smell when they're blown out - I always try and sniff it in which is probably not the best idea...

*Carols, the Messiah, the beginning of Advent with the candlelit service that begins in darkness. I'm not especially religious but I love all the stuff round Advent and the Nine Lessons - get very excited by the time we get to 'And there were at that time shepherds abiding in the fields, keeping watch over their flocks by night...' At Christmas I like to do even more singing than usual.

*Sunny, frosty days. Even though this is practically designed to make my lungs act up. I also like going for walks in said weather, ditto.

ooohhh i'm glad we can have 6 things :-)

I love the music (being a music teacher it helps LOL)

Playing in the christmas concert with the orchestra - but sleigh ride is one of only 2 pieces i REALLT want to play percussion!! I want to play the sleigh bells!

I love being able to be a bit silly - in my last week of school before christmas i always put loads of bells and tinsel in my hair - you hear me well before you see me hehe

Christmas parties / meals / getting together with friends

i love Christingle services though it's not done in my church, i have to make do with standard carol service / christmas mass

Time off school haha

can i get back to you after christmas!

This is the first year since DS was born that DH hasn't had to work Christmas day. We're starting loads of new traditions so when it's all done I'll let you know what worked, what didn't and what we loved.

Can anyone tell me where I can find an Elf on the Shelf? Can't find one in my little bit of Wales

My six have to be

* all the lovely Christmas food :)

* making Christmas cards as that's so much nicer than other occasion cards

* happy memories that are made :)

* the excitement of watching people opening presents and opening my Own

* the way everything smells so lovely

* have to agree with Charlie knowing my birthdays approaching

Also knowing New Year is fast approaching new year new start and all that

My secret giggle over Christmas has got to be the people who panic buy because supermarkets are shut for a day or even two and the people who run around the supermarket ten minutes before closing on xmas eve expecting there to be a good choice of turkeys

Think that's everything x

LilTinx, I agree with you about watching people panic buy - it's enormous fun. My favourite is the couple who have two loaded trolleys which the husband is left to guard while the wife goes foraging for the best goodies along the nearest aisle. She always looks stressed and worried and he looks as if he's about ready to end it all.

Anyway, my best things are:

1. Buying gifts that I know people will love - even more fun now I have the grandchildren

2. Planning and cooking lovely meals - now that the grandchildren are here i go to my son's house for Christmas day and my son and I cook together for the family and, very often, half a dozen friends. 3. Watching everybody have a good time.

4. Lovely music on the radio, cheesy films on TV.

5. Seeing friends and family during the day - I usually see people in the evenings because I work, so it's great to be able to go out for a long lunch and see everyone in daylight!

6. Having a nice long break from work so that I can sleep for hours, relax and start the New Year with lots of energy and enthusiasm - well, that's the theory anyway.

One thing I miss, though, from when my children were small. My ex-husband woldn't pay maintenance so I was living on benefits and broke, so each week I would buy a few goodies to stash away for Christmas and I LOVED watching the boys come home from school and dive into what they called the 'Christmas Cupboard' to see what I'd bought. They'd discuss what was already there and what they hoped I'd buy with huge excitement and enthusiasm, increasing as we got closer to Christmas. Life was so tough, but I treasure that memory.

How about Jesus???

I see your point, Kate. Speaking personally, I was not brought up to have any faith and i resepect other people's beliefs enough that don't believe that it could ever be right to profess to a belief that I do not have.

What I have seen, however, in all the posts on this thread, is love for family and friends and appreciation of the pleasure that most people get at Christmas. It might not be religion but it seems to me that it contains most of the components that Christians look for at this time of year.

I have loads! But seeing as most people are sticking to 6 I think I will have to aswell!1 - Christmas music/carol services.2 - The way people seam to become more generous at Christmas time.3 - The religious meanings behind it all (Jesus is the reason for the season :p )4 - The smell of mince pies and roasted chestnuts!5 - Spending time with the family, and the looks on the kids faces when they talk about santa!6- All of the decorations and pretty lights!
