Hi new to this and my son's asthma, so any advice is welcome.

my name is Linny and I have a 6 year old son who has asthma. We're all new to this as we only found out on december 20th. He was taken to hospital with a suspected chest infection and kept in, after tests they told my husband and I that he as suffering from asthma (much to our shock) as it doesn't exist in either side of the families. Poor laal fella was in a sorry state for him self but after a course of steroids and 10 puffs of ventolin every 3 hours he seem to be fine again. Were still in shock as there's so much information to cope with, I think my son is coping better with it than we are! But we feel slightly overwhelmed by it all. He has had a couple of instance's since but doesn't let it slow him down. So if anyone has any advice for us it would be really really appreciated. Thanks Linny.

I'm the asthmatic in my family (only recently diagnosed). As no one else in my family has asthma, it's been pretty much left to me to do the research There is a lot to take in, but I'm finding that the theory is more scary than the reality.

I've found that with by knowing the triggers, following the medication routine specified by the professionals and avoiding infections like colds it's not too bad. Unfortunately, your son's asthma sounds to be a lot worse than mine and I feel bad for him but hopefully you'll find what works for him quite quickly.

Speaking from personal experience, my advice would be, plenty of visits to the doctors, don't leave the heating on overnight (I find that one to be a nightmare), and don't spray aerosols in his presence.

Even if this doesn't help, I wish you all the best and hope your son doesn't suffer too much.

my son is 5 and was born coughing and has never stopped!! things will probably seem a bit harsh right now but once things are better controlled it will seem brighter.

my son is ill again at the moment triggered as usual by the seasonal cold / virus, and starting back at school after the holidays, you will learn the things to look out for and the times you will need ti be increasing your childs inhalers.

plus the help you should recieve from your gp and practice nurse should be invaluable.

its heart breaking watching your little ones suffer but there is so much help and advice out there now!! i hope your little one keeps well !!

Hi i was told i had asthma shortly after my first birthday which means i am coming into my 15th year of having asthma.The only advice i can give you is to make sure all inhalers are indate - seems like a stupid thing to say but you wouldnt believe how easy it is to forget when they go out of date so it can be best to mark it down on the family calander/or note board so at least one of you will remeber and to make sure you have plenty especially when you go away for a set period of time on holiday or to visit long distant family and friends.

make sure you know your sons limit on his blue or reliever inhaler that helps him when he becomes short of breath as i know some inhalers you can over does on as i have done in the past.

if hes at school make sure the school fully undertand whats wrong with him and what to do if he becomes short of breath and they know who to call with as many contact numbers as possible,i'm almost 16 and my school have so many numbers for me just to be on the safe side.

if at your doctors suguery theres an asthma nurse there x amount during a week to book an app. for you and your son to go to or just to go and see the doctor for regular check ups.

I used to see an asthma nurse once a month or once every 3 weeks or months depending how my asthma was and i found it a great help and so did my family as you can fire as many questions at them and their usually a great source of help without trying to get a doctors app which isn't always easy.

In winter make sure your son is also wrapped up well as asthmatics feel the cold and by putting a scarf round his mouth and nose stops him breathing in cold air that may affect him when out and about in cold weather.

sorry about the essay as it may not seem useful coming from a girl who is only 15 but i hope this helps as i've had plenty of expreince in this and i wish you the best for the future

i totally understand what you mean by having other asthmatics in the class with him,its a great support and as he gets older and in classes with other asthmatics they may be able to share experiences and what works for them and what they can or cant eat or do.it'll proberly be a great help for him as he wont feel as strange as when i started school there was 6 at most who asthma in the whole school and i was looked at as if i didnt belong on earth or in the same room as them!

Its great hes still so active!its the best part for an asthmatic is being able to be soo active my asthma like i think i may have said spun out of control 4 years ago and meant i couldnt do as much yet i loved to play football,dance or play rounders in the summer.

what ever he does tell him to keep smiling and enjoying the sports especially in the summer!!!just make sure plenty of water has been drunk!!!

glad the visit to the asthma nurse went well
