is it asthma or not?

My little boy was taken into hospital a month ago, when the dr came before discharge everything he spoke about was asthma related,he even called it asthma, on the discharge papers they said it was a viral induced wheeze. He has been backwards and forwards to the gp since, to be told hes fine and then he has had antibiotics which didnt touch him at all. and we have since been given a brown inhaler but the gp said it isnt asthma because the wheezing is always in the right of his chest. Could someone please tell me whether this is the case as i really dont know what is going on, the only thing that stops him wheezing is his blue inhaler, the brown we have only started using today.

Many thanks x

Hi, this all sounds very familiar to me, Dr's kept referring to my son as a wheezy baby and I was told by a relative, who's a nurse, that they wouldn't diagnose Asthma until he was at least 2 years old (not sure why) We knew it was Asthma as it runs in the family and we had countless trips to hospital because he was not on any specific meds. They do have to keep trying different meds as the same ones don't suit everyone. My son is now 15 and does have Asthma, he still has to have a lot of time off school because of it and has recently had his preventive meds changed from Flixotide to Serevent. I don't know about the wheeze just being on one side, I haven't heard that before, all I can suggest is trust your instincts, ride it out until you have a diagnosis and don't take any chances, if he is wheezing and the brown inhaler doesn't work, give him the blue one until you can get him to hospital if it's an emergency.

thank you for the advice. its all pretty new to me, my sons 5 and before a month ago never had anything wrong with him, but this wheeze now just wont go away. its confusing when different doctors tell you different things too not to mention frustration, x
