Hi all, my little one turned two in March and has just been diagnosed as asthmatic after four attacks since October, all of which they've treated with prednisolone and salbutamol.
We're now starting to work out how to manage it, just wondered if you had any advice as to how to get the best plan of action.

Hi, my little one has also been diagnosed. He is almost a year old. During the attacks he is very wheezy. We have been sent to the children's ward by our doctor or have taken him to A+E during the night. The doctors kept telling us they would not diagnose asthma until the age of 3. Although the nebuliser always helped him. He has a Ventolin and budesonide inhalers. And after an attack is given soluble prednisolone tablets. This week after taking him to A+E we was told he was asthmatic. This was his 5th attack.
Day to day we give him 1 puff of budesonide twice a day. And use Ventolin when he needs it. This varies from 4 puffs every 4 hours to none a day. We would be interested in what works for you!

When our son was 2, he was diagnosed with asthma - he was seeing a consultant for his hayfever, and he (cons) discovered the asthma - we'd had no idea, just thought that some children purr, and he 'had a cough', and he coughed all the time - he'd had antibiotics (about 5 courses ) from GP which had made no difference. Son is still under the consultant for his allergies but particularly the asthma - for us it was great as this person really knows what they are talking about, and has been able to guide us through. (child is now 8). That's how we've managed.

the best thing is that his asthma was picked up early. all three of my children were diagnosed before they were 6 months old and it made it less scarey as at least i knew what was wrong with them. Just make sure he takes his regulaer preventor. If it helps when my son was 2 he was a bit upset at having to wear a nebuliser mask. so we covered it in power ranger stickers (he won't thank me for posting this as his 11 now) so that he could be a power ranger too. Also having been diagnosed so young your son will just accept he has asthma as he won't know any different and i found mine were never embarassed by it, in fact it has led to many years of peak (kick asthma) holidays, phot shoots, a book published all about my son and even a day of filming with blue peter and last month a trip to blue peter and even a back stage party for my 11 year old. so its not all bad 
Thanks for your input. We've suspected for a long time that there was more to his wheezing than just the fact that he had bronchiolitis at a week old. He's a cheery little soul and we're hoping it's not going to make any difference to his life. Thanks!
My son was 2 when he was diagnoised with asthma. He is 14 years old now , but still has it.
Thanks for your replies. Seems I joined this website at the right time as he had another severe attack on Monday - he deteriorated very quickly so we were overnight in hospital, several doses of salbutamol and atrovine through the nebuliser, yet another course of prednisolone and he's still on 40 puffs a day of salbutamol. He's been on four puffs a day of beclazone for a month but it doesn't seem to have had any effect - this was his most severe attack yet. At least now though they're taking it seriously and we're back at the hospital in six weeks to review his case. Well, as long as he isn't in anyway before that!

Thanks for all the information you have been posting on this site. I have been reading it this evening and its really helping me widen my knowledge about the subject. So far, Isobel has had 4 asthma attacks - and she is currently on the 'blue' and 'brown' inhalers, twice a day.
Whilst I know the inhalers help, in fact are often critical, I feel that they are a very reactionary way to treat such a worrying illness. Please understand, I'm not criticising and perhaps I'm still being a little naive, but I would really like to understand more about how to treat the cause, rather than just the symptons. Is this just wishful thinking?
If anyone has any experience with allergy testing - or anything else concerned with finding out more about the cause - please can you let us know,

My little girl is three and has been diagnosed with asthma for the past year, she was on ventolin and becotide inhalers but was still wheezy and coughing. we saw the consultannt the other week and she started on singulair 4mg daily as well which seems to of done the trick. i had to suggest he try this he did not offer it. I am asthmatic myself and take it therefore knew about it.
