Maddie has had her typical cough all day and its been worse on exertion as always.
However, she's just gone to bed and I know full well what tonight will bring!!
Cough, cough, vomit, cough!!
I feel jittery and on edge. I can never relax as am always listening for it to start.
Anyone else dread the evenings/night-times?
Yes Emily - I do when my son is ill and I know I'm going to be up maybe several times in the night. I don't sleep properly (on 'alert') and wake up instantly I hear the coughing. It's awful.
Hi Emily, I would get an appointment with your asthma nurse for a review for Maddie. A cough that won't go, that is affected by exercise and is worse at night means that her asthma is not well controlled. I don't know what inhalers she is using but it doesn't seem that she is on the correct ones - or maybe not the correct dose. I am an 'asthma nurse' and would definitely want to see her. Getting the right treatment makes all the difference and poor Maddie (and you) need a good nights sleep. Chris

Maddie is on Budesonide nebules twice daily, serevent, Montelukast, ventolin, salbutamol nebs as and when along with daily anti hists. She has a course of Pred every 4-6 weeks too.
She has been described as having 'difficult to control Asthma' and sees the cons every 4 weeks and had a bronchoscopy/ct scan last week of which we are awaiting results.
She coughs a lot throughout the day when doing anything but sitting. Poor thing. I've got her community resp nurse coming tomorrow so will mention what you said etc. It's horrid and scary and sometimes I feel that maybe I just take her symptoms, espec the cough as being 'normal'. It kind of becomes the norm to hear her coughing all day long.

I know exactly where you are coming from. I too dread bedtimes. I really feel for you...it is so hard. I don't know about you, but I sit there waiting for it to happen and when it does I get a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach. I can cope with the sick and the washing etc, it is the fact that they get so upset that is so heartbreaking.

certainly know how you feel.
But thinking about it, we also find it scary when our son isn't making any noises, when he is asleep. We worry that he isn't breathing, stupid I know but after listening and worrying night after night for all them years we can't help it.

Hi Emily!
I totally understand where you're coming from. My 4 year old daughter came down with a cold this week (the 4th since christmas) and since Monday night she hasn't slept because of her coughing and vomiting. The worst is that I feel so helpless. It all started last April, sometimes it gets better but the cough is always there in one shape or another.
Get Maddie checked out by your asthma nurse - I would if I had a specialist on hand but since we 've moved to Germany it's all got a bit complicated.

Asthma is so very much underrated and very very scary indeed.
I guess we are just wanting answers. Maddie's SATs are low constantly and she coughs regularly. Yet we've still not got anywhere. I guess she isn't sick as much since going on Budesonide nebs so thats one good thing.

i no how u feel, my girl 8months showing sighns ov asthma coughs and chokes till shes sick once she coughs i cant sleep she can barely move so get scared she wnt be able to spit the sick, my boy is 2 and same again always on edge slight cough in the day and i no usually we'r up for a rough nite, so every little cough and i see wots to cum adrenalin takes ova my body i get anxtious scared knowing how serious he cud get i always get that feelin 'wot if' wot if i aint quick enough, wot if it gets worse and i dnt get him a&e quick enough along with 1000 others rushing thru my head its awfull, and hes had it for 2 years poor boy, breaks my heart x x x x x hope fings gets easier for u swn x x

We had a bad night on Tuesday night, due to Fraser having a very mild cold! We ended up going in to hospital early Wednesday morning. We have just got home this afternoon and I find myself logging on to this site. it is such a great support. The night times are so hard, especially when you are so tired but you are also worried about your baby! I recently bought a baby monitor (Fraser is 6yrs) and this has given me great comfort at night and in the evening, I was always worried he would start coughing and I wouldn't hear him because of the television or something. I bought an analogue one made by fisher price and the sound quality was rubbish so I took it back I have since bought a BT digital 100 monitor which is still on offer in argos at £39.99 and it is brilliant so reassuring it was worth every penny.

I have only just found this site - my son apparently does not have asthma but a multi trigger wheeze and yet he is on the same medication as the ones listed on this site. When he is bad I too dread the nights - he coughs and coughs and coughs...................... there is nothing that seems to stop it apart from the steriods which he can only have for 3 days at a time.
This bad episode has only lasted for 3 weeks but today I am weepy, angry and frustrated. He is 4 years old and his notes from the consultant tell me that his rib cage is deformed through coughting.........................

I know exactly how you feel. Louis has suffered since he was two and he is now nine! For a time we have had a reasonably asthma controlled run (mind he is on seretide, ventolin, singulair and daily antibiotics and of course steroids when he is unwell)
These last few months though he has really gone downhill and seems to be on steroids and extra antibiotics continually (just had to take him back to gp yesterday for yet another course of anti b's which is his third in three weeks)
I seem to cope during the day but as soon as late afternoon arrives Louis starts to go downhill and I am on panic alert. I hate the evenings and for the last three weeks have been camped in my son's room (thank god my husband is understanding!) as he has had nebs as well, and I just feel I need to be there at all times.
Just like you all say here, when your child is quiet you even worry then about whether they are breathing etc and I am continually checking!! I don't know why I am putting exclamation marks here as really I could sit and cry my heart out............
Louis is missing so much school that I also worry abot that.
