Covid vaccination invite letter

Just received letter inviting me to book jab. The letter is in English of course, and lists 28 other languages that interpreter offered. Didn’t realise there were so many people who don’t speak English in Uk. Some are refugees of course, and Ukrainian is in list.

Hope you’ve booked your jab now Jean. Pete has his on the 25th. It’s good they have so many languages on the letter as many don’t have English as their first language. We’ve had letters like that too. Xxxx

Sorry, but I really dont understand why you would query the provision of interpretation for other languages. We are a multi-ethnic country (thank goodness). Glad you've had an invite anyway.

Not sure anyone was querying it, O2Trees. It's interesting, that's all. xx Moy

My nephew's wife is a teacher in inner London. I think at one time there were 43 different nationalities attending and each had their own language! xx Moy

I think the schools do a wonderful job. One of the hospital porters told me that he and his family came to England from Poland when his son was 5 and he had to start school knowing nothing of the language. He was given support and soon picked up English. He has just started senior school and is doing well. I was so pleased to hear that the Ed system is working well and that these poor kids are not just left to get on with it.

Regarding hospital patients, I can't imagine being in another country and having to guess what the letters sent to me mean. There will be lots of other languages needed, apart from the 28 displayed, but at least it's a start.

My granddaughter is hoping to study medicine in Germany (her mother is German) as many of the European medical schools teach in English as it is the most used language. Just throwing that in as an interesting fact.

Thanks, clearly I’m out of touch, result of not going to public places. Recall that 25 years ago in hospital I found that females of some races where stopped from learning English according to nurses. My daughter has 5 Ukrainian refugees staying with her, they are keen to learn English.
