CT Scan

How long on average do people wait for the results from a CT Scan? I had a scan on May 20th and I'm still waiting for the results. I rang on Monday and was told I may have to wait up to 12 weeks which seems ridiculous to me

Depends on what the CT scan was for. Acute scans are generally reported on the day, Cancer pathways are within 2 weeks and general outpatient appointments are generally reported within 4 weeks. I'd imagine your scan has been reported on and is awaiting your consultant to read it and get back to you.

It was for Bronchiectasis, just seems to be ridiculous to take up to 12 weeks, If I was a dog the Vet would have the result faster

The report will have been done and awaiting your consultant. I'd assume it was always planned to go through it with you in your next consultant appointment. I work in a radiology department and I'd imagine the report would have been done within the 1st few weeks. Try contacting your consultants secretary or just hang fire until you're next appointment.

By the time I get to see him I'll be wanting another scan as my condition would have progressed lol

I'm sorry to hear this. I don't understand why it has to take 12 weeks. I have a friend who was on the Cancer pathway. Even that took weeks and to my knowledge that was the "speedy" time wait. I can't understand why you cannot get the results within days if not the same day. It is very frustrating. My sister is now also on the cancer pathway. I worry. We get the results on the same day in Japan what is it we are doing differently? I am sure the equipment is the same?!? xx

I was told when i had mine on 4 july 10-14 days to ho to your consulant or whoever ordered it but mines been a month so far dr couldnt get them up as the hospital blo ked them.I suggest try ring the consultant secretary up and mention that you had your scan on give her the date and say uou havent heard anything.

If you could wait for another 2wks then chase it up just to see if you get a call or something in the mail good luck hope its good news nothing to serious. Mine was to see if he was missing something in my small tubes inside my lungs

Sounds ludicrous to me. Find out who is reporting on it & approach directly via email or through secretary. Unnacceptable!

I had a ct scan one month ago because I have 5 lung nodules. I previously had one 3 months before that and another 3 months before that. I’m hoping the nodules have got smaller or even disappeared but I’ve still not had the results from the last one. It makes for a very anxious time.

Like everything else in the nhs it takes months to get things done. I would imagine your results are waiting for your consultant. As others have suggested ring the secretary. I am waiting to see neurology and have been told it will take around 12 months to get an appointment. Its all been put down to covid . The nhs I am afraid need a good overhaul x

Maybe the consultant is on holiday or off sick?

It is a SHAME .I had the same problem until I decided to dig in my savings and have it privately ;if you shop aroud a normal CT scan will cost you around 400 grand but normally they give you a DISK the same day to show it to your nhs consultant in months time(!) or (more logically) to show it to a PRIVATE consultant in a week time (avg 200 pounds)

I know, is not fair , but is the only solution when the problem is serious and you need fast response.

In 2018 I was diagnosed lung cancer (2 cm) but all the exams ( CT, Bronchoscopy, PET ) took 3 months , in the meantime the cancer grew and DOUBLED; this implied the removal of the entire left lung...

Whereas if done privately in a week from discovery, a simple keyhole surgery was enough , instead of the traditional one, living me at least 1/2 left lung.

And now my breathing could have been times better.😥😥

PS of course , if you have enough savings ...

Lesson learned.

Now I needed a visit for my pulmuary hypertension : a waiting list with a common specialist was two motnhs, a visit with a private consultant professor at Royal Brompton + exams is going to cost me almost 2 grand.

All done in 5 days...and the heart ultrasond on the NHS lasts normally less than 10 minutes at Harley st it lasted more than 20; HCG done with the latest machine -only 3 sensors! and go on...

All the best ,

I was told that only certain people can "read" these properly, so there is a backlog waiting to be read (for the more tricky stuff), If one of the specialists is on holiday, the backlog just increases.
