Nice dollop of vanilla ice cream with that 😋, eat it quickly before the ice cream melts though!

That looks delicious! Sounds like you’ve got great neighbours! 😊x

How can I explain . It's a thing here almost everyone has an orchard olive trees and fruit trees so always lots of fruit not everyone can sell it so what they don't use or give away hits the dirt and become fertilizer

Jaybird19 profile image
Jaybird19 in reply to

on holidays in Greece Islands could never buy lemons for gin and tonics could buy other fruits in the places we went o if we chose the right day when the boat bought the fruits in so was always deprived of fruit on holiday except for the time that someone tried to sell me some apricots when out walking and gave me one to try . Bad mistake . She had lots of cats and was trying to sell me fruit off the ground . didn't know that until I went in to buy some and want that but I had eaten one, and months later I developed an infection in m eye that the immune tests showed I had contracted toxoplasmosis in the fortnight that I was away in Greece . toxoplasmosis is a parasite carried by female cats that attack heart tbrain and eyes. It took ages to diagnose and had to have my eye lasered to kill the parasite there . Here we have toxocara , the dog variant of this but the cat parasite is not so common. can be associated with undercooked lamb too and the usual symptom is like flu.. Always wash fruit before eating. How nice to get lots of fruit given to you , the greeks are very generous people on the whole and you have been accepted as one of them after all the time you have lived there

in reply to Jaybird19

I always wash my fruit even if I bought some from the minimarket it's a habit always had even in UK .

in reply to Jaybird19

The old couple across the road are always working their orchard picking fruit but never the ones from the floor , always wondered why not the ones on the floor so I asked demitri he said chicken skata on floor floor dirty

They can always send some over here. I’m sure there’s lots of people who would use it. Lemon meringue pie. Cheesecake with strawberries. I wonder if you could make orange cheesecake. I’ve had mandarin orange cheesecake. You can make a crumble with fruit. I used to make a lovely apple crumble.

in reply to Mavary

You can make a cheese cake using any fruit I've made kiwi cheese cake and a pear cheese cake

Mavary profile image
Mavary in reply to

Of course you can. Cheese cake is one of my favourite sweets.

in reply to Firefly25

They also bring me eggs I have a German friend down the road from me who also bring me eggs but most importantly some duck eggs. So I can always nock up an omelet 😂😂

Mavary profile image
Mavary

Mmm! Now you are talking my food. 😄

in reply to Mavary

Well I'm cooking a prawn omelet tonight you fancy one knocking up , I'm using duck eggs

Mavary profile image
Mavary in reply to

No thank you. I’m not keen on eggs or prawns. We used to get a fish man deliver and I always bought a quarter of prawns off him and I used to sit and eat the lot. It puts me off when they put prawns in a creamy sauce. I hate creamy sauces.

in reply to Mavary

I don't put the prawns in a sauce just make the omelet and add the prawns with peppers and onions 😂 good healthy my

Mavary profile image
Mavary in reply to

My Son would love that. He loves the giant prawns you can get. He will try anything. I remember when he was about fifteen. He ordered a plate full of whitebait as a starter. He ate the lot and enjoyed them. The first time he had them. I couldn’t bear those little eyes looking at me.

in reply to Mavary

Love whitebait like eating sticklebacks 😅😅 my old local pub used to have them as barfood on a Sunday

Mavary profile image
Mavary in reply to

I’ll reserve my judgement as I’ve not tried them. I remember having sprats when I was young and they were ok!

in reply to Mavary

If you eat sardines or pilchard well just smaller version

Mavary profile image
Mavary in reply to

I used to like pilchards on toast.

in reply to Mavary

There you go look on white bait as pilchards 👍🏼😂

Mavary profile image
Mavary in reply to

I would definitely try it if it was put in front of me but I don’t like to see their eyes. It reminds me it was a living thing.

Gosh ! I can only imagine . Straight from the tree! I only eat supermarket fruit in London - ( not very often - diabetic ) but it’s usually tasteless or sour!

in reply to Dessert

Totally fresh sweet and full of flavour 😂 too many fruits from abroad in UK that's force grown

Dessert profile image
Dessert in reply to

Nice! They use pig hormones in some fruits . And a man I was chatting to during a hospital visit told me that he worked for a company that grew grapes in huge high barrel type containers and they used chemicals to grow them .

in reply to Dessert

You won't find that here every thing is natural

in reply to Maggie_Mae

Nice as jam

Rhubarb is something people forget about but it's really versatile

Lapis5 profile image
Lapis5 in reply to Maggie_Mae

How do i make stewed rhubarb with out white sugar a s i am diabetic?

in reply to Lapis5

When boiling your rhubarb add a little corn starch and just have the natural sugars from the rhubarb

in reply to Lapis5

But the best fruits for diabetics are blueberry strawberry and raspberry if you can get them . My godmother was diabetic and made jams and preserves and she always used gelatin and corn starch and it tasted fantastic but she liked blueberries and I kinda got hooked myself . Hope this helps you out

You're better than the tv cooking programs.😋😋😋

in reply to Alberta56

Don't know about that one 😂😂😂

in reply to Alberta56

To me cooking is like having therapy it helps my mind and soul . I've just prepared dinner for tomorrow night and enough for three more meals . I've made a lovely prawn and mushroom curry . Not too hot though. Because when you freezer it the heat intensifies. There's a tip if you like a hot curry freeze it for a few days it gets hotter

Alberta56 profile image
Alberta56

I can't take hot curries unfortunately, so tend to use mild spices like mustard seed when I have the energy to make one. I only cook because there are some dishes I really like to eat which you can't get decent versions of in the supermarkets. Mainly sweet things like Pavlova. Brian longs for Buckinghamshire Badger, a suet pudding with bacon, onions, potatoes and sage. Absolutely yummy in the winter, but it takes 5 hours to cook. 😋🤐 I'm making myself feel hungry. xxx

in reply to Alberta56

Love suet pastry it's taking me back to being a kid watching my gran making pie's she used to make one with corn beef bacon leek mmmm now my mouth watering , so what do you think about tirimisu

Alberta56 profile image
Alberta56 in reply to

DONT!! i haven't made Tiramisu for ages because It's not good for people with diabetes (Brian) or heart attacks and bronch problems (me) Perhaps I should indulge, you tempter. xxx

in reply to Alberta56

😂😂 I must admit I've made the one with alcohol and one without I prefer the one without . There's not much sweet stuff I enjoy but I do like tirimisu lemon meringue pie and love cherry crumble .

Dear Daveyboy1963,

I just MUST 'Harvest' this years 'Cherry Plums' and DO 'Something' with them. Perhaps I'll Keep It Simple and just use 'JustRoll', or similar- I can't 'Do' Pastry... not even if my Life depended on it! One of the Supermarkets, I think Morrisons, 'do' their own version- Very good indeed.

If you're not Familiar, with Cherry Plums, they are a small-ish 'Plum' fruit, the tree often planted as Wind Beaks- in place of Poplars (which might get unruly in smaller locations).

They are Fruiting Now, though some years it can be earlier. There is a 'Seed' in the middle... Keep these for Pectin, if you are going to make Jam (very good too). In case you are Wondering.... Yes you Can put Other Fruit(s) with them, especially other 'soft' ones.

Maybe 'Surprise' yourself with your Baking skills!

AndrewT

in reply to AndrewT

Here on the island we have plenty of different types of orange lemon odd lime trees almond the odd plum tree loads of grapes melons but not come across cherry plums I'll have to ask the old guy across from me I'm intrigued thank you 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

in reply to Bardear

Unfortunately after I had a small piece I gave the elderly couple who gave me the fruit the pie and they enjoyed it I personally don't eat sweet things 😂

Bardear profile image
Bardear in reply to

I'M SURE YOU ENJOYED THE PIECE YOU HAD. AS FOR THE COUPLE WHO GAVE YOU THE FRUIT THEY MUST HAVE BEEN REALLY PLEASED TO SEE THAT YOU HAD DONE SOMETHING WITH THE FRUIT RATHER THAN JUST TAKE IT POLITELY AND THROW IT AWAY.

HERE IN ENGLAND THE WEATHER IS NOT REALLY OKAY TO GROW LOTS OF THINGS THOUGH THIS PAST MONTH OR SO IT HAS BEEN SO VERY HOT SO PERHAPS SOME PEOPLE TRIED TO GROW SOME THINGS THAT WE DON'T/CAN'T GROW IN THIS COUNTRY.

XXXX

in reply to Bardear

Anything is going to be possible because of climate change. Yes the old couple quite often give me different fruits usually oranges mandarins and lemons loads of lemons , most of it I make fresh juice and it's better than carton juice and free 😂😂😂

in reply to dunnellon

I've been given a full cubed uncooked chicken breast and asked to make a filling meal for a family of four . Looked in the cupboard found a tin of peas and carrots drained them fried the chicken in a little garlic butter , added the peas and carrots and a tin of condensed chicken soup put in a baking tray topped with mashed potatoes and finally topped with grated cheese . Popped in oven till golden brown . Just had a text from them are everything it was fantastic can you make another next week 😂😂😂
