I take carbocysteineThey do thin the mucous so it may seem like more.u do need to get it up &,out. Ru doing dedicated sessions to get it up? If not,do read up on it and if u spend time 2or3 x day, till lungs are empty,it should be more manageable

Just wondering if you’re coughing more because it’s loosening everything up: you don’t say what your diagnosis is or whether you do regular airway clearance, but if you don’t, then that could be a factor. Thinning sputum makes it easier to move, but because it’s looser and moving, that may be making you cough more, in which case the moving may also need some extra help via physio techniques. My daughter has a lung condition that makes her productive on a daily basis, but she doesn’t clear anything at all without meds to thin her sputum and then proper airway clearance twice a day, sometimes not even when she has an infection. She’s currently positive for two bacteria and we think potentially something fungal, coughing up rubbish as a result, but only when she actually decides she’ll do her meds and airway clearance 🤷‍♂️

I nebulise the same drug and it made me cough like the devil when I was first put on it. That settled and now I just cough during and after nebs. It makes the acapella so much more useful. Evil stuff though. Between the stench and the coughing it’s a pretty nasty affair. God bless filters!!

Hello, Wheezle. Acetylcysteine isn’t currently licensed for nebbing here in the UK; my understanding is that very, very occasionally it may be used that way in intensive care at a consultant’s discretion, but for respiratory purposes generally, it’s only actually licensed as an oral med. It’s also only the effervescent tablets that can be prescribed, although there are people that haven’t been prescribed it that purchase the capsules online and take those.

Oh wow that’s interesting. I hope it’s not risky. It was commonly used here in Australia but I think now not due to the government not subsidising it. It’s available here if the patient pays or gets it through the public hospitals though.

I think it’s a lack of robust evidence more than anything, as the regulatory bodies here, NICE and the MHRA, are pretty strict about what they will and won’t accept as demonstrating efficacy, particularly on the basis of cost. Also, please don’t think my reply was a criticism, it was purely information sharing. As you say, it’s really interesting how care varies in different places. I’m here because my daughter has cf, and although there are standardised guidelines, care for that also varies quite a bit around the world, but particularly in the US.

Thanks for your reply. I lost my first boyfriend and later my best friend to CF. Such a horrible disease. Care for it has improved so much since then. I hope your daughter has a long and rewarding life ahead 💗

Hi nottowell. I apologised if my previous comment was not helpful. Our situations and geographical locations are different. I hope you find the answers you seek and that your asthma improves. I can see how something that makes you cough could potentially trigger things but also as others have said maybe it just all needs to come up. Best wishes xx

NAC can be purchased over the counter here in England so it can't be that dangerous, I'll buy it if my GP ever refuses to supply my mucylotic. NAC is also used in other European countries (I've been prescribed it in France and Croatia in the solubleform like yours). Many of us here on the forum take Carbocysteine to soften mucus making it easier to cough up.Like Charlie, I suggest your NAC is working & the extra coughing is to bring up the softened mucus. Perhaps try the Huffing technique to get the mucus up. P

Carbocisteine tablets from Gp thin mucus . I also take Covonia Mucus relief cough syrup if and when I have a cough, which fortunately is not often. The Covonia is herbal and has liquorice. xxSheila
