My consultant is going to town with his blood tests. He is now saying that I have anaemia, low white blood cells and low vitamin d., as well as the expected allergies.

How normal is all this with asthma.

I've not got anemia but the rest of it sounds pretty normal to me

I've also got a folic deficiency too

I have iron deficiency anaemia, but no link with asthma. Controlled by a daily dose of ferrous fumarate, but annual blood tests to check liver is necessary.

Vit D deficiency is not uncommon in the northern hemisphere as we just don't get enough strong sun in the winter months and if we don't get out enough in the sun at other times of year or always use sun block, then that doesn't help our bodies process the Vit. Low VitD does have an impact on the immune system. Using antacids can also impact our absorption of vit D in our diets.

A low white blood cell count is an indicator that your immune system may not be working at full strength, but your doctor should talk you through the results if it's thought your health is affected. It could be that your results are just below normal.

Allergies are not uncommon for those who have asthma, but they can happen independently. Again, a discussion with your doctor about the impact on your health.

Hi

Agree with Chip.. no anaemia but I always have low WBC’s and antibody titres - caused probably by pred and high inhaled steroid use. I don’t worry anymore.

I think there are lots of stats suggesting that most of the population of the UK are deficient in vit D - thanks to our fantastic weather!!😜

I’m sure your team will address these issues with supplements if necessary and you might find that helps your symptoms enormously.

🤞🤞😊 good luck

HiI'm anaemic and have been since 2002. I normally have high Wbc, which my doctors say are due to long term use of Prednisolone. Whatever your results I would make 2 suggestions, ask for a copy of your results and then talk through them with your GP. You can make any notes beside a value and if you are really not happy about something you can ask to speak to a haematologist.

A lot of research shows a link between asthma exacerbation and low vitamin D in adults, so it sounds like your consultant is checking things thoroughly. Here’s a review of research in this area. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

Like Anselm198 I would ask for a copy of the results to make sure you can talk everything through with your consultant. Good luck!

Im the same but low iron isnt connected to my asthma. Vit d perhaps if your on steroids a lot. But ask ur gp or chest cons ur under at hospital. Write some questions down for the drs it may help as i find they talk 100mph and cannot take it in. Hope this helps x
