Cold feet and amitriptyline or celebrex

Hi Everyone

Please can anyone who takes either of the above drugs tell me if they have developed very cold feet, similar to Raynauds?

Thanks

Kathy

Hi Kathy,

I have never heard of anyone complain of cold feet in relation to these two drugs, and it's not listed as a side effect for either of them in the BNF.

I have taken low dose amitripytiline for years (initially for IBS symptoms, now for neuropathic pain in my feet as well). I have had unusually cold feet for about eight months, since my prolonged ICU admission, but I don't think it's related to the amitripytiline. Nerve damage in the nerves to the feet (which I have) can cause circulatory changes in the feet, making them colder (it's more normal for nerve damage to make the feet warmer, but it can happen this way around - trust me to have to be different!). Other things that can cause nerve damage are: diabetes, trauma or pressure on the nerves, certain vitamin deficiencies, autoimmune diseases like lupus and rheumatoid, and certain drugs such as some chemotherapy drugs.

Other types of circulatory problems can also have this effect - furring up of the arteries in the legs can cause cold feet. Furring up can occur due to all the usual reasons for furred up arteries - high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, family history of heart disease or stroke, smoking. If this is the cause, it's fairly common to also get cramp-like pain in the calves on walking, which usually comes on after walking a fairly set distance and eases off at rest. Occasionally people also get pain in their calves or feet when lying in bed at night, which is relieved by hanging the feet over the edge of the bed. If you or someone else has these symptoms, then they should be checked out by a doctor.

Other than that, people do develop slightly reduced circulation in their feet, and therefore colder feet, as a normal part of getting older. My grandma is forever complaining about my grandad having cold feet in bed at night!

Sorry not to be more use.

Take care

Hi Em

I just wondered about the Celebrex as I have only been taking it since this summer and the cold feet seem to coincide. However, I have been taking the amitriptyline for around a year for peripheral neuropathy. I also have arthritis and some of the less common symptoms related to Sjogren's Syndrome, which was also diagnosed in the summer.

I think I am just trying to track down the cause of the feet problem - they burn sometimes and my legs tingle and hurt when I have been either standing for a long time, or walking more than usual (which is not very far!). I saw my GP this week and she thought some of the leg symptoms could be related to something-tendonitis and that I need to use ice on it and rest it as much as possible. I have taken her advice, which has helped until today, when I have been catching up with housework and my right leg is really sore again. Thinking back, the tendonitis may have been caused about a year ago, when I was trying to increase my stamina by using a treadmill. That's when the arthritis flared up in my feet too.

I'm sorry to ramble, but I'm trying to find out what pain is related to joint/muscle problems, and whether anything could be drug side effects.

Thanks for your help.
