Adult autism diagnosis procedure

A couple of days ago I went to my local GP to discuss my concerns for thinking I may be on the Autistic Spectrum. As a result of listing reasons why etc, my doctor then phoned to say I had been sent off for referral to have a proper assessment.

My question is, now stage 1 of seeing a GP is completed, what next? I understand the assessment can happen in over a years time, but does anything happen beforehand?

Are there any other appointments/questionnaires needing to be completed? Or is it a case of just waiting for an assessment and that's it? If someone could confirm what the next steps for a diagnosis are, that would be great.

Many Thanks

When my husband was referred, we received a letter from the adult neurodevelopment team with a short questionnaire to fill in. We returned it and received another letter to say that he is on the waiting list. The waiting list for a childhood assessment is 18-20 months around here. I don't know how long the adult list is. Good luck. x

I think the averages are

Adult 2 years

Child upto 3.5 years

I think end to end mine was 18 months to two years or so having in my hand my letter as proof but I was very lucky I realise now to see that fast

You may be sent for like a little interview thing with a few short tests and a chat before a diagnosis process/chat - I say interview as if your results on these tests isn’t in the suggested range it’s likely you’re not on the autistic spectrum but may be on something else or nothing
