What sort of support do you need?

How are you coping with your diagnosis? Are you finding it difficult to understand or are you relieved that you have one because everything makes sense? Are you professionally diagnosed or self diagnosed? Are you receiving support if it’s available to you?

I ask these questions because it’s really dependent on the requirements for support. I was diagnosed at 16, and whilst initially I received support because I was labeled as a child/teenager, most of that support fell away by the time I hit 18 and then I had to go privately to seek a specialist. If you’re able to afford this, or it’s covered by any medical insurance that you may have in your country, then I’d recommend it. A diagnosis can be difficult to understand because it’s a sense of finality and confirming something that may be assumed to be negative or at least that’s how I felt, and I think if I hadn’t had support in place I probably wouldn’t be here. With support you also learn coping strategies and methods to put in practice, even if it’s a work in progress. You can ask your doctor or the person who diagnosed you (if it’s an professional diagnosis) what support options can be explored.
