hpv negative... Could it still be cervical cancer??

I had my smear test on the 25th may, i have just recieved my results which says as follows; your results is hpv (human papillomavirus) negative This means your risk of cervical cancer is very low and there is no need to check for abnormal cervical cells even if you had them in the past...

Im very confused as ithought they check for abnormal cells then find out what is causing them? Should i still be concerned or does this mean i dont have cervical cancer?

I'm not the best person to answer your questions. Bur I would emphasise that the best way to prevent cervical cancer is to ALWAYS keep up to date with your smear tests - no excuses which was my BIG mistake.

Take care

Hi there, thank you for your message.

HPV is checked for first as it causes over 99% of cervical cell changes. Agreeing with your doctors/results letter, having an HPV negative screening result means that your risk is extremely low.

If you have any cervical cancer symptoms, you need to speak to your GP, rather than have another smear test/wait for the next one, as smear tests/cervical screening doesn't investigate potential symptoms.

This is a very reassuring result and hopefully will put your mind at rest.

Nurse@eveappeal.org.uk is our email address if you have any other questions.
