Smear test / Colposcopy query

Has anyone here had multiple HPV positive smears and colposcopys and biopsies .... then it goes away and comes back multiple times, each time only CIN 1 thankfully. Now suddenly because there is no HPV, they are not checking for CIN cells and I am back to 3 yearly smear tests.

I feel there should be a check for CIN cells especially if they have been there previously and multiple times. I have argued it with the consultant at the hospital but they seem to think that without HPV present there is no reason to perform a cytology for CIN cells.

Has anyone had experience of this or any words of wisdom to reassure me this is OK?

Many Thanks x

Hi there,

Thank you for your message. We absolutely understand the worry and confusion over this, and have had several similar conversations with other women since HPV 'primary testing' came into place. So please rest assured that you're not alone with these concerns.

One of our researchers and a gynae oncologist said this regarding a similar query:

''Unfortunately, the screening program won't look at the cytology unless the HPV is positive. This is well proven to be safe and effective in CIN"

HPV causes almost 100% of cervical abnormalities and cervical cancers, and in the cases where there are abnormal cells but no HPV, it’s often because the HPV has cleared yet the cells haven’t yet returned to normal, which they often do.

Testing for HPV first is a much more sensitive/effective test, about 15-20% more effective/accurate than the ‘old’ way, where cells were tested for abnormalities first.

So to sum up, it's proven to be a safe way of 'doing things' but we do understand your worry/anxiety over not having a cytology test. The only thing to do in this case would be to pay privately for one.

If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to get in touch with us on nurse@eveappeal.org.uk

Best Wishes,

The Ask Eve Team

Many thanks for the advice, very easy to understand and reassuring. I have paid in the past for a private one and maybe that is the route I need to go down again for reassurance!

Thanks again x
