Hello I am 56 years old and had a health scare last year following my first ever abnormal cervical screening. There was a discrepancy in my results so I was closely monitored by the hospital but then discharged in June. End of July to date post menopausal bleeding; referred by GP under 2 week rule for transvaginal scan & maybe hysteroscopy 14th August. Trying to keep calm & know it may be nothing sinister but having the occasional wobble! Feeling quite sad this morning but trying to be sensible. Live alone so too much time to think about it. Any tips on staying sane between now and Friday?
Thank you for your reply and thank you for asking how my appointment went. In the end I didn't need to have the hysteroscopy as the scan showed that my womb lining was what they termed "nice and thin". They think the bleed is down to my declining oestrogen levels and adjustment of my HRT will help to address this. The bleeding had stopped and they checked to make sure.
One surprise was that they have found a small cyst on my left ovary (unrelated to the bleeding). Because of my age I have to have another TV scan in 4 months time. Going back to your question about pain; yes the hospital sent me a letter about the fact that some people find a hysteroscopy painful and advised me to take 2 paracetamol one hour before my appointment and to let them know if I have ever fainted with period pain. They also made sure I had read the leaflet and that I had taken pain relief before I had the scan. I have had a scan before and knew I would cope. My daughter was a breech baby so after going into labour with her and the birth (which was relatively pain free once I'd had an epidural) I no longer find these things as difficult, just a bit embarrassing but it's the fear of cancer and the uncertainty of what's going on in my own body that I find so difficult. The staff were very kind and I managed to be home by lunchtime. I understand your wife had a difficult time with a hysteroscopy; I know some women find it difficult and have to admit I was pretty relieved I didn't have to have one.
I am glad they warned you but it still anoyes me paracetamol is only placebos and do not work till after other pain relief is denied liked locals gas and air and voltrol witch is a nsaid so is safe to take unless you can not take ibrprophine I'm not against outpatient but think denying women pain relief is not ok My wife had hers under GA but I have 2 close friends that have had horrific times with it 1 with clinical PTSD and about 10 aqrentinses that have had fairly bad times
Hello and thank you for your reply. I don't think my team realised that I had had a wobble as I am outwardly quite calm at appointments. I feel much calmer now that I have had the appointment. I only had to have the tv scan in the end and not the hysteroscopy as they found that my womb lining was 'nice and thin'. They think the bleeding was because of declining oestrogen levels and that I need to continue with the HRT I'm on to get the right dosage. I didn't even see the consultant; on my letter it said 2ww pmb nurse led clinic. The nurse checked and the bleeding has stopped. He advised me to keep working with my GP on the oestrogen dosage. I am on TV oestrogen and also gel & progesterone in tablet form. They did find a cyst on my left ovary at the scan and I have to have another scan in 4 months to make sure it isn't any bigger. I have a busy few days coming up when it would be difficult to talk; getting my hair cut and spending time with family - so nice things - but I may take you up on the offer at a later date. I have had a chat to Tracie once before and she was really kind and helpful. The scariest bit is the not knowing and now I have more facts I feel like I can get on with life a bit more.
