Hi there.

Thank you for your message.

The first thing to know about HPV is that it's an extremely common virus that over 80% of sexually active adults will get at some point in their lives.

Normally the body's immune system will get rid of the virus, but sometimes certain strands (there are over 150 different strands of HPV) can develop into abnormal cells. The abnormal cells and presence of 'high risk HPV', i.e. strands that are linked to cervical cancer, are what our cervical screening programme (smear tests) is in place for.

If a woman has high risk HPV, she will be tested more frequently to check that abnormal cells are not developing.

If a woman receives an 'abnormal' smear test result, then she will most likely be referred for a colposcopy (a camera into the vagina), to have a look at the area more clearly. Depending on the grade (quality) of the abnormal cells, treatment will be offered to remove them.

If you have any more questions, or would like to speak to our Ask Eve Information team, please email nurse@eveappeal.org.uk or free-phone 0808 802 0019.

Additionally, Jo's Trust are a dedicated cervical cancer charity, and have a lot of fantastic information about HPV, so do have a look at their website as well.
