Concerned about cancer....

Hi

I been suffering abnormal heavy bleeding between periods i.e. every 2 weeks to the point I've got to set an alarm through the night to change my pad and always have to wear night time pads through the day also taken to wearing incontinence pads during the night still need to change it once through the night. Pain during sex/pelvic pain/lower back ache/fatigue/blood tinged discharge. Most for the past 9 months some over the last month or so. I've been diagnosed with anaemia due to the bleeding. I've also had a severe headache for the last 10 days. I've had a colposcopy and a polyp removed the polyp was benign. I got told by my gp and also the colposcopist that my cervix bled to the touch and the colposcopist needed to use an acid to stop the bleeding during the biopsy. I am obviously worried about having a gynaecological cancer and I was quite surprised by my normal biopsy result. I definitely think something sinister is going on whether it be cancer of the cervix or womb. something is definitely not right and I don't know what I can do now. I've made an appointment with my gp to ask to be referred to a gynaecologist and I'm going to ask for some more tests i.e. a cone biopsy and/or hysteroscopy

Hi Natalie,

Thanks for posting on the AskEve Forum.

I'm sorry that you have been having a difficult time, it must be hard for you.

While we are unable to give you advice on specific medical or clinical symptoms on here, we have the AskEve service where you can speak with our Nurse Specialist.

The freephone number is 08088020019 or you can email on nurse@eveappeal.org.uk for our specialist nurse to speak with you directly. The service will be running from 10am-2pm next week.

It is reassuring that you have an appointment with your GP set up, and we wish you well.

Thanks,

Eleanor

Hi Natalie,

I was worried about being seen as a hypochondriac by my doctor and put up with bleeding like that for about 18 months. This was partly because I had heard stories from relatives and other women about these massive, clotty bleeds and had assumed this was part of "the female condition" when you got to a certain age. Please don't fall into the same trap.

What is happening to you is seriously undermining your quality of life. I can imagine you are living in fear of having a hugely embarrassing "accident" when you are out or of ruining your bed and bedding. Also having to wake up to deal with the problem several times a night or always having to think ahead about whether you'll have access to a bathroom.

Even if this is a benign symptom which is down simply to age and hormones, it is wrecking your well-being and you must tell people so and insist that they get it sorted out for you. Please tell your doctor that your quality of life is being ruined, that you can't put up with it any more and that s/he really has to get it sorted out for you as soon as possible.

Hi MrsMiniver,

We are so sorry to hear you endured bleeding for that long. It is not pleasant, particularly if you felt you couldn't speak about it.

You are absolutely correct. All irregular and abnormal bleeding should be cause to consult a doctor or healthcare professional, especially around the menopause as this can confuse women about what is normal for them.

We hope you are feeling much better now!
