Severely collapsed hip

Spectacle_stylist profile image

Hi all

I am currently waiting for an urgent hip replacement as mine has now collapsed and have lost over 2cms in length on my left side.

I fell of my bike last June and had 3 cannulated screws put in my fractured neck of femur.

These sadly had to be removed 5 days before Christmas last year 2019, because my hip crumpled around them, leaving the screw to grind into my pelvis and the outer of my thigh!

Sounds dramatic! I also managed to contract a hip infection, which has hopefully cleared now.

I am due a hip aspiration, just to double check as my hip has serverly collapsed and my consultant is worried.

Sadly there is currently a COVID-19 outbreak, which this has now been put back.

I completely understand the NHS has there priorities at this scary time!, and more then happy to hang tight!

I was just wondering if anyone has any pointers to relieve this dibilatating pain please?? 😒

The pain shoots from hip, knee to foot....

I'm so sorry to hear of your dilemma. I have only one suggestion, if you visit the Arthiritis Action website and look under resources, they have all sorts of information you can download. Pain relief is among them, and I have downloaded all and find them very helpful. I have OA in my hips and RA everywhere else. Sending best wishes to you.

Thank you very much, I’m willing try anything!

On the plus side I’m rocking the pink crutches 🤪

Glad you're feeling in the pink. 🤓 My favourite colour.

Hi Spectacle_stylist , sorry to hear you're struggling at the moment and that your replacement has been pushed back due to the ongoing COVID-19 challenges.

We have a number of light exercises on our website that may help you keep the hip active and improve mobility.

Each exercise is gentle, and should be practiced at a comfortable pace to make sure you're continuing to use your hip. These will maintain the muscle around the joint, which will help ease the pain. However, if you have any concerns about whether they are suitable for you, please consult a healthcare professional before taking part.

Many thanks for your reply..... 🙂

Unfortunately I am not weight bearing and my hip ball is non existent- do you think a tens machine would help??

Do consult a healthcare professional if you have any worries about starting new exercises, however many of our examples have been designed to be done while sitting, and to put little/no additional weight on your joints, so it is certainly still worth looking to see what you are able to do.

Regarding a tens machine, this is also something you could ask a healthcare professional about depending on your situation. Tegular exercise is essential as it helps to strengthen the muscles that protect and support the joints. Exercise has even been proven to help reduce the pain of arthritis and improve function.

As the previous response mentioned, our page on pain relief may also provide some good examples on how to manage some of the pain you're feeling.
