Hi, I have RA DIAGNOSED FOR about 2 years now, still getting to grips with the meds! I have had a few absences from work due to bugs and viruses picked up (3 in the last year) and work have set up a disciplinary meeting, as much as I have tried to avoid the pesky germs I can't get away from them and my methotrexate does make me more prone! How do I explain this to my workplace? Am I right in blaming the meds for this? Feeling a little lost and in need of guidance

All DMARDS including Methotrexate lower your immunity to bugs.

You could get a booklet either from your hospital, or download it and print it to take to your displiary meeting with you. All the best.

Hi that doesn't sound like a very nice place to work! I have been taking Methotrexate for many years now and I don't suffer from many illnesses. I might get a cold like everyone else but the fact that I work in a small office with about 20 people all squeezed in, that's hardly surprising! My consultant once told me to take Berocca every day to ward off germs. I usually take it if someone in my family is sick or if alot of people at work are dropping like flies 🙂.

You should print off information on the actual Rheumatoid arthritis as they obviously have no idea how awful it can be. I don't think it will be the methotrexate causing the illnesses but you could call the consultant to confirm.

I feel for you and to be honest, if you have to face any disciplinary action due to having too much time off due to poor health, you would be able to take the company to a tribunal for unfair treatment. No one can help ill health.

Methotrexate does lower your immunity, that's the whole point of it, it's to stop our own immune system causing us inflammation. Anyone with a lowered immune system will definitely be far more susceptible to catching viruses and bugs.

I have been on Methotrexate for 14 years now and Embrell, Eteracept/Benapoli for around 12 years, or for as long as it's been around I was one of the test patients. So for the past 14 years, I have learned to avoid certain circumstances where I am guaranteed to catch something, it's all easier said than done.

I would contact your Rheumatology Nurse and ask her if they would supply a sick note for you, explaining why you are so susceptible. You could also ask your GP although they may charge you, the Rheumy nurse won't. Good luck and let us know how things go for you. x

As you have RA they should in the first instance got an occupational health report, which will lay down what the company is expected to do to support you with your illness /disability. I have been through this. Eventually I had to take early retirement after 7 years as my osteoarthritis/ osteoporosis became worse. Also join a union. I was very anti doing this at the beginning but they were brilliant every meeting I had my union rep with me who would point out what your company should be doing. Hope this helps
