Does your arthritis affected your mental health?

Hi everyone I have psoriatic arthritis and was managing the best I could until its become a vicious circle now that its decided to go into my feet more often now. So I've had to re-home my dog because I can't walk, which was keeping my feet and joints supple. Now I feel like I've lost my sparkle and use a stick. I get so tired doing the smallest of things and becoming isolated. Any tips as I've put my feet in warm water, or a cold compress for a short while, all the usual stuff

BeeBee, I'm so sorry to hear that you've had to re-home your dog. What a heartbreak, and pets are so good for your mental health. The short answer to your question about arthritis affecting your mental health is "absolutely". Here's a discussion thread that you might find interesting:

As for your feet, what kind of treatment are you getting? How often do you see your rheumatologist? If your foot pain is bad enough to force you to give up your beloved pet, maybe you need something more aggressive than you are getting now.

Hi Seenie I've only just got my appointment for next month to see a second rheumatologist. I've suffered with mental health issues for a long time way before I developed psoriatic arthritis (I should have worded my statement differently sorry) and now I've lost my social worker due to cut backs on services....so I've been left virtually hanging by a thread 😢 I've been on so many sites about all my conditions bless you for sending that link. Hope you're taking care of you 🤗 x

Hi my wife as PSA. Sadly any chronic illness as an affect on mental health. Depression is common, so is anxiety. What helped my wife was a pain management course at the hospital. My wife went one day a week for eight weeks. She found it looked both at the physical and psychological aspects of her condition. My wife stated they were very realistic when giving advice from coping to pacing her day. It was a fight to get her on the course but well worth it.

Hiya. I have been living with psoriatic arthritis too I totally understand you. Sometimes I think it’s stressful situations like having to let your pet go or any emotional incident it’s causing pains to intensify. Our mind is so connected with our well being and body reactions it’s something hard to comprehend. With psoriatic arthritis I would avoid any hot compress on joints from my own and my dads extensions it only got worse. Cold iced packs are fine. And if you can listen to meditation sounds you can find few on YouTube I do that every evening before I go to bed. Calm your mind. Also if you can avoid certain food like dairy/ heavy meats/ gluten/ sugar bad oils. Lots of fresh fruit and veggies on daily basis. Drink plenty of water and detox. Apple cider vinegar with water first thing in the morning. I also take flaxseed/brommelin/tumeric/ matcha green tea/ rose hip supplement/ potassium .... 80 % of my pains has gone due to the changes also back in gym as exercise is very anti inflammatory and fight depression. I am off meds now no more methotrexate/ sulfosalazine just occasional course of prednisone. I really hope I could help a little. Keep me posted keep happy meditate if you can :) all the best, love Iva x
