I Know it seems silly but make sure you are drinking plenty of fluid. And try and get someone to (lightly) massage the muscles that are cramping.

Get your magnesium level checked if low can cause cramps.

If you sit with legs up put rolled towel behind knees takes pressure off calves helps with calf andfoot cramp.

Sorry if I sound like your mum

I have had those, not just the usual back of calf cramps or "charley horse," but can be anywhere in my legs or feet and occasionally in my rib muscles.

Here are some things that have helped me:

1) Drink plenty of WATER not sugary drinks, not coffee or tea, not even fruit juice but water, 8-10 8 oz cups per day. For nightime cramps, drink a glass of water about 1 hour before bedtime

2) Magnesium supplements. For me the best absorbed seems to be the chelated type but there is no consistent research. According to my chiro, I experimented starting with low dose and working up. It's easy to tell if you have too much as it can cause loose stools. I take the max I can without having this side effect.

3) Stretching exercises. A yoga class for seniors (Silver Sneakers) has helped me a lot. I do routine stretching plus before bedtime if I am having night time cramps.

4) When I have a cramp, try stretching the muscle that is cramping. For calf cramps, it usually helps to stand up and put weight on the leg. Massage the muscle gently. When the cramp stops, ice or gentle heat can help with the soreness and help prevent a reocurance in the same muscle.

Good luck, hope these suggestions help.

Are you on an osteoporosis drug called Evista/ Raloxafine? This can cause calf cramps amongst other side effects. 2nd thought: could you be short on pottasium for any reason? although I would not advise it , I did find taking one pottasium tablet once a day for 2 weeks really helpful. The cramp I had was absolutely horrendous. And as you say so sore the following days. And I did not dare stretch out in bed because that would 100% bring it on instantly as well as it coming on anyway but had a bit of time to get out of bed in that instance. Have had feet cramps as far back as I can remember but they were milder compared to the calf cramps.

I think I got the pottasium tablets online. after reading on a health site the side effects of lack of potassium. I can't tolerate the magnesium tablets so make sure I always eat plenty of green veg. Limiting Brocali to once a week at most as I've read that it's best not to eat anymore of that in a week.i like the spring cabbage/ greens, but not keen on kale, too many stalky bits ! which I know is very good for one.. I've always liked drinking water and these days I treat myself to spring water to have in the bedroom.
