Hi, can anyone share with me your hip replacement experience please, e.g. Recuperation period, side and after effect, what needs to watch out before and after, etc. I am due to have one in few months' time and would be help to know. Many thanks!

How much detail do you want?

I had one of mine done in Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre in Bristol which is part of Care UK. This was May 2014.

It was a super experience, arrived 06:00 Thursday - 09:00 to Surgical suite for prelims etc. 10:00 met Surgeon Mr Tarique Parwez for first time!

10:15 saw Consultant Anaesthetist Janos Hamza and told I was having a spinal block with sedation. 10:30 start op which took 49 minutes -

11:30 in recovery for tea and sandwich. 13:00 to ward for lunch - 16:00 out onto side of bed.

Friday on frame for shower and later in morning given crutches for the afternoon.

Saturday check walking and manage to climb a few stairs -12:00 x-ray to check everything OK - 15:00 discharge to home.

The worst thing for me was the elastic stockings, my wife couldn't get them on or off!

I did manage the self injections around my waist to stop blood clots.

Just ask any questions, only too willing to answer. Pete

Just remember to do your physio exercises , this is the most important aspect after your op. that is the only way you will get your movement back, I had my Hip replacement 4yrs ago and stopped my physio after the first year, I then started to have problems bending, walking ,etc I paid to see a physio and he said that I would need to do my exercises for ever otherwise the same thing would happen that my muscles would tighten so this is what I do now apart from that everything good, still walk with a slight limp but at least free of pain.

Thanks for your reply! Can you walk normally without limping or pain now? How long did it take you to recover? Any side effect?

No limping and no pain, about a year for full recovery. No side effects.

Because I had an accident when I was ten, one of my legs was about 15mm longer than the other, this meant I had always walked with a sway. The surgeon assured me he would make both legs equal in length which he has done.

Should last for 15 years. I average about 3000 steps a day.

Thanks! How long did it take you to recover? How long will the new hip last before having any op? How long can you walk now, if the other hip is not hurting?

Get an apron with a big front pocket. This gives you some independence when you are on crutches or 2 sticks. My flask went in plus a mug (I hate drinking out of a flask) My breakfast went in a lidded bowl, in hospital I could carry all my wash things. If I left the ties slack the mixing bowl went in so I could even bake. Also get some satin/silk ppyjamas ,you will be able to move arround the bed more easily.I found this out by accident when I nearly slid off the bed the first time I turned over! Ruth
