Has anyone got a solution for a fear of 'heights' in a teenager?

I have a son, who is 15 and has an ongoing fear of heights/ stairs/lifts. He had counselling a couple of years ago and we thought he was improving. However it has gotten worse in past 12 months. There is no definite pattern to it. It is affecting where he can go. I would be grateful for any help.

Hi there, how awful, a young boy growing up wish such a fear. It must be heart breaking for yourself and husband to watch your children so afraid of something and so desperate to get the help for him....

I cannot give you lots of feedback on this myself as i have not had any experience with it at all but a friend of mine had this problem and he just went out and done something to stop the fear of it again. What he did was just go to somewhere that had height, someone was with him and he held onto them and they just done it. I cant remember now what it was he did i think it was climbing or something but please don't hold me to that.

Anyway he got to where he needed to be and opened his eyes and stood there, holding on to his friend but just stood there for a while about half hour i think. Was chatting and had water, then just sat down on the grass, well he said grass i remember that so it must have been some kind of climbing. After being sat there a while they had to face going back down and that was the fear more than anything, being unable to get back to ground. So maybe this is your sons fear inside somewhere.

All i know is, my friend and his friend walked slowly downwards but his legs felt like jelly so he just went down on his bottom and came down that way, the fear subsided quite a lot, this is all i know as we lost contact somewhere down the line. Now all i am saying is maybe this could work for your son.

its only a suggestion, they do say to beat the fear is to face it and i can tell you that is so so true as i suffer panic disorder and i have had this over 30yrs now but i face it every day and i get through, not overly easy but it can be done.

So just want to wish you well with this and do hope you can find something that will help your son. I know how hard it is when its your children suffering no matter what it is they suffer you feel for them so much. Good luck hun. xxx
