Really awkward question on SSRI's and intercourse.

So. I feel embarrassed even asking this. But I have been with my girlfriend for a little over a month and we finally decided to cross that bridge, however, I did not feel turned on at all. Then she got embarrassed as she though she was doing a bad job. I tried reassuring her it wasn't her and blamed the meds, but can SSRI's (I'm on sertraline) lead to issues like that during s*x? Its not an issue I suffered before I started the meds and this is the first time since taking Sertraline that I've gone this far with someone.

TrippyMcGuire762, it's nothing to be embarrassed about. It's a fact of life. As for your question, yes SSRI's and even blood pressure medication can cause that effect. Maybe you can have a talk with your doctor the next time you see him. It's a common problem.

I know that SSRIs definitely have that effect on women, so it makes sense that men would also be affected. As Agora says, have a frank talk with your the doctor who prescribed them. If he doesn't have a good answer I would see a urologist specializing in male issues. You don't have to be embarrassed as doctors hear about this problem ALL the time.

My husband and I had a perfect intimate life for 14 yrs. started meds and poof it’s awful. So I would say yes.

Thanks all. It was embarrassing for me as it was my first time with her (not in general), and she got the idea that she wasn't attractive to me, and started feeling bad. Gonna set up an appointment with my doc for as soon as possible and try and get it sorted.

definitely a side effect. Sometimes doctors will prescribe Wellbutrin to help with that while you are taking a ssri. Usually it takes longer to climax with an ssri because it decreases sympathetic response.
