There's a few side effects of propanolol. One can make you sleepy yes. 40mg is half way dose wise as they range from 10mg to 80mg(I'm in the UK so can't speak for other countries). Their job is to treat anxiety plus panic attacks(plus other things like angina, high bp, thyroid problems and many more). It can cause things like visual disturbances and I used to have nightmares. But yes in answer to your question they can make you sleepy, I would speak to the doctor about being light headed....that may disappear once in your system. They do work for alot of ppl once the dose is right. A friend of mine started on 10mg x2...3 times a day for anxiety and that was increased to 40mg then 80mg, she's not had a panic attack now for 3 years. Just please make sure once you start taking them...you don't run out. Order or see the doctor a week prior to running out then you know you've got them in. It's not a pleasant experience if you find you don't have any...the anxiety is off the scale!. Sending my best wishes. Janie

Yes it's the anxiety...taking new tablets is a fearful thing. The saying 'You won't know until you try it' comes into mind. They will, I hope, help you feel better, what's normal anyway? Lol. My life with anxiety was my new normal for over 20 years. I would honestly tell you if I thought they would harm you...i can't be 100% as I don't know you're history but the doc does. Please try and take some deep breaths after taking one and sip water. Write down how you feel as I found that helps and you may see a difference in a few days ie..lightheaded today but Friday...gone. hope you feel better soon! J

I actually take propranolol at night for high blood pressure. My doc also said it would help with my anxiety and headaches. I have never taken it by itself because I have another med I take at night so I'm not sure how it works alone, but paired with my other med it works wonders.
