Anxiety caused by sexual abuse by father

I was sexually and psychologically abused by my father from 8 until 20 and am now 74 and have completely gone to pieces and can do nothing even though I coped until now bringing up very successfully my two boys virtually single handed as my husband drank and was no support at all. He is fine now and very supportive but it seems that it is too late and I am unable to enjoy what is left of my life. I just don't know how to let go of the unfairness and hatred that is still ruining what's left of my life.

SG1943, that was a terrible experience you had to be abused for so long by the person who was supposed to be protecting you. You have every right to enjoy the rest of your life as you have nothing to be ashamed of, the shame is all your father's. You did no wrong, you are the victim.

You say your husband has changed his ways for the better and you have two sons who you consider successes. And if you continue to take your vitamins you could well have another 20+ years of good life to look forward to☺

So you have a lot to look forward to and deserve to enjoy your remaining years. I think that you need the help of professionals to help you achieve the peaceful mind that you deserve, I believe there are therapists who are very skilled at helping victims of abuse to recover, what you are suffering from is a form of Post Traumatic Distress Disorder.

I remember some years ago seeing a poster on the London underground railway for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children saying that they help 'children' who have suffered sexual abuse regardlessof how old they are. If you live in the U.K. I suggest you contact them and ask if they can help you with therapy, don't let the maturity of your years stand in the way of reaching out. Otherwise discuss your distress with your doctor and ask for a referral to a therapist with experience in this area. Don't just do nothing, you deserve better, you don't deserve to end up feeling bad like this.

There is an answer to every problem and it's never too late to seek help and recovery which you so clearly deserve.
