Larry, sorry to hear you lost your job but as they say 'every adversity comes with the seed of a greater benefit', one door closes, one door opens. If you've been diagnosed with anxiety by your doctor then the symptoms you're experiencing, your insomnia, feeling weak and heavy feeling in the head are bound to be anxiety. Those anti-anxiety meds you refer to, do remember they can take 3 weeks or so before they kick in.

Maybe the anxiety was caused by the job you were doing so losing it may be a blessing in disguise. For whatever reason though your nervous system has becomed over sensitive because of stress and worry and in that state it can produce the symptoms you describe. Sensitised nerves are good at mimicing real physical illness which is why many people with anxiety think they're suffering from some serious physical illness when in fact it's good old-fashioned anxiety.

The method for recovery from anxiety disorder that I believe in in the Acceptance method whereby instead of fighting the symptoms and frightening yourself half to death you accept the bad feelings for the time being with the minimum of fear you can manage. This gives sensitised nerves the chance to recover.

The Acceptance method is described in full by Doctor Claire Weekes in her book 'Help and Hope for your Nerves' which is available from Amazon. Sometimes you can even pick up used copies on Amazon for just a couple of dollars. I strongly recommend the book, it's life changing and has helped untold thousands of people to recover since the first edition came out about 40 years ago.

Anyway, you're not going to feel this way forever I assure you and I hope your recovery begins soon.

Sorry, Larry, that book is called 'Hope and help with your nerves' in the U.S., not the other way round, and also called 'self help with your nerves' outside the U.S. but copies under this title are sold in the U.S., same book so whatever's cheapest.

Hi Larryolusola, I'm also from Chicago (born and raised). As great as our hospitals are in this big city, anxiety still tends to take a back burner. Anti-anxiety drugs are needed at times to get us unstuck, to lower the level of our anxiety. However, the meds can do only so much. They can give you that heavy head feeling and weakness. We need to work in conjunction with the medication through therapy or other anxiety reducing methods. I'm so sorry about the loss of your job. As Jeff1943 stated, things do happen for a reason which for an anxious person may not be realized at the time. Dr Claire Weekes' book on Acceptance is a great starter for you to help you realize we are more in control than we think.
