Yes that happens to me from time to time. Has for years actually. I ususlly just readjust and go back to sleep because I'm used to it I guess. But at times it does freak me out

Omg do you actually do something to make them feel better or you just go with it?!

That happens to me all the time. I have had chronic insomnia for years. I'd love to know why it happens. I get completely freaked out by it.

Hi Loumack1, I just read an interesting article on Hypnic Jerk as it is called. It's an involuntary jerk that occurs just as a person begins to fall asleep causing them to abruptly awaken. It is accompanied by a falling sensation, rapid heartbeat, quicken breathing and sweat. The potential causes are several, one being anxiety.

It stems back to our primate ancestors who sleep in trees. It occurs with muscle relaxation with the onset of sleep. It signaled the sleeping primate awake so he wouldn't fall out of the tree. The reflex jerk was known to have sleepers readjust sleeping position. (as stated by RyRywifey) I never knew what it occurred :)

Thanks for that info. I started googling it too and came up with hypnic jerking. I never got down to the primate routes of it though so thank you. Nice to know We would be safe tree sleeping though 👌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼😂.

Yes. I have heard that when your anxious a lot during the day and then finally lay down to chill out/go to sleep at night. Your body kind of jerks awake because it's afraid it's shutting down or something ? Maybe before bed you could try taking a warm bath... listen to relaxing music... try to really wind down and relax before bed. It might help? 🙂

This might sound weird but if you have palpatations try a few good hard coughs.

Cure for palpitations too is to tap your forehead gently for a few minutes. It distracts you so you can't feel the fast heartbeat. When you stop it has usually calmed down as when you can't hear it you are no longer getting more anxious and prolonging it.

It helps me every time.
