This began happening to me in July of this year (2016). It happened after having a complicated migraine which caused visual aura and loss of feeling in my fingertips and feet. My doctor told me that I'm having anxiety attacks now not sure if they're related to hormonal changes or menopause or the complicated migraine that I experience some months back. However I've heard from several people that it can be controlled by CBT, cognitive behavioral therapy, which I'm going to look into today because I had another episode last night which literally made me jump out of the bed. I don't like feeling like this it's made me fearful of not only sleep but of driving. If there's anyone out there who is tried CBT please let me know if it was helpful for you. I really don't want to be on any medication for anxiety or heart palpitations.
Sadly this has been happening to me too. - Anxiety Support

Sounds as though you have Ocular migraines..I get them..they seem to come in patches...a few now and again.
I researched and nobody knows what causes them but the theory is that it may be an imbalance between Seratonin and Dopamine, this causes the blood vessels behind the eyes to narrow, hence you get the flashing zig-zags and loss of vision...good thing is that you can see again after 20 minutes or so, sometimes it leaves you drained and with a migraine, other times it just goes.
You can take Sumatriptan when it starts which opens up the blood vessels again, but as you say, stay off the meds if you can, and it's not gonna kill you....it passes...try not to stress out as anxiety can bring them on i find.....as with IBS and lots of other nasty stuff.
Good luck.
