Can certain foods trigger anxiety?

Hello everyone.

I have been having panic attacks recently at night and thought it has been due to my IBS. I then cut down on my sugar and glucose intake untill tonight. Now I have woken up all flustered with my heart racing. Is it possible for food to set off panic attacks?

Certainly foods high in sugar or caffienated drinks will do that, but being still and quiet makes you think, maybe calming music s relaxing book, prsyer, sound of water playing. Relaxation tapes yoga breathing, all helps. Talk to me anytime. Sweet blessed dreams 💤

Thank you for the response. It is just frustrating as some nights I am perfectly fine and others I wake up in a panic. I had pasta last night so I'm not sure if that's what set me off? Can gluten cause panic attacks?

Not sure, but regardless, this is no fun, I also get this and I try not to let my mind race too , take a few slow deep breaths and try to refocus or turn on tv to a happy type show till it calms down. Prayers

Hi Chanelle05, I use to notice that the heart palps or racing heart would be prompted by eating chocolate in the evening or having a cup of regular coffee or even tea. The other thing was eating before bedtime pushed up on the heart when you lie down and can cause the heart to skip beats. When we get scared of the skips or even have a stimulating dream, it can cause the heart to race. When it wakes you up from sleep, best thing is to get out of bed and pace back and forth using up the extra adrenaline. When you start getting tired, sit down and start relaxing and deep breathing. Once your heart is under control again, go back to bed and enjoy a restful night.

Thank you. I find if I have a big meal for dinner I battle to sleep without waking up with a racing heart. I am assuming it's due to gluten or sugar but I'm not too clued up on the matter?
