Anyone try St John wort?

Wondering if anyone here has tried St. John wort for anxiety or depression. I'm hesitant to go on pharmaceutical level meds, and I've heart St. John is comparable to ssri's but with less side effects. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with it, positive or negative, or if anyone knows anyone else who's tried it.

Years ago a friend tried it who was a heavy drinker and couldn't take medications

for depression. I talked with the pharmacist who was a little hesitant about mixing

alcohol and St John's Wort. For him, it didn't work, he ended up with severe abdominal spasms which had it quit. Any herbal medication needs to be monitored as to what you can't mix it with. I'm sure there are others who did well on St Johns.
