I cannot go out of my comfort zone.

I have periods in my life when I think that I am winning the battle against anxiety and panic attacks. This is when I am in a regular routine and doing things that I am comfortable with.

I am anxious about being a long way from home and not sleeping in my bed. I saw a documentary about a guy travelling around the Artic Circle. Just watching the program and seeing the challenges that he faced made me feel very uncomfortable. I have previously travelled around the world but cannot imagine me doing it again. I feel very sad about this as if life is passing me by.

I have just started a new part time job which is also making me feel very anxious. Why is it that when I attempt to do something new that I keep getting those terrible feeling of anxiety.

Very best wishes

M

Its very normal to feel like this , and good for you over coming your anxiety but there is always something that sets it off again, and for you this is it.. But why don't you set it as a goal rather then a misery especially if you said you feel sad thinking you'll never travel again, so you obviously want to?? And starting a new job is scary but I'm sure after a week or two you'll be flying :-)

Thanks that is much appreciated. I will set myself a travel goal and accept that starting a new job will have some scary days. Very best wishes Mark

Hello

I feel the same and have travelled all over the world overland and flying. Some of the time we would see life in the raw. Some things we saw was mind bending and very frightening. Many areas in the Middle/Far East made us understand differences in many strange, to us, Societies. Many of these States of course are or were at war. This can cause discomfort and now I would not return to these States.

Life is the same in a way, we sometimes feel we are in one nightmare that we feel we want to wake up from, of course in life here or abroad we are awake and that fear may need to play out its course, we have no choice just partake. The same situation can happen when their are changes in our lives. I suppose anxiety is one of these situations when we would prefer to be left alone within a area of comfort and warmth.

I suppose we should crasp that change and run with it. It may open new pathways and progression at work for example. Although life with anxiety is not like that when we cannot control anxiety or depression. Of course that is a different form of exploration.

Hi Bob

Thanks for your reply. I get very frustrated with myself when it comes to issues with anxiety. About 4 years ago anxiety and panic attacks had such a grip on me that I had no life. I have over the last few years managed to reduce the hold it has over me. Most day to day activities I am reasonably fine with. I have a travel bubble of about 2/3 hours travel from home. When I see TV programs where someone is travelling abroad I find it hard to imagine me doing something similar even though I have travelled abroad a lot.

I think that I will set a plan of travelling 4+ hours from home.

Best wishes

Mark

Anyone might feel stressed about a new job, but for with anxiety it can a really big deal. Same with travelling. I am a planet and when I do something new, or that I haven't done for a long time, I name backup plans for how I will get out of it if I need to. That is, how I will get to a place that feels safe for me.

It's good to set goals but don't put extra pressure on yourself , we need to take care of ourselves and be forgiving if things need to go slowly.

Thanks it is very easy to put too much pressure on yourself and then find that you are struggling to to cope. Best wishes Mark
