Hi Lisa,

Sorry, I've never heard of Topamax so can't advise.

My mam takes mirtazapine & yes she has gained a little weight. It was explained to her that it doesn't in itself make you gain weight but it can stimulate the appetite, unfortunately it sounds like that's what it's doing to you :( I do think the effect lessens though the longer you are on it.

I can only suggest you try the same as my mam & get lots of healthy, low calorie snacks in. When you're feeling hungry try to remind yourself that you're not really, it's just the meds making you feel that way & reach for some fruit or something. Easier said than done I know.

As her doc said 'Let's get you feeling better first, then we can worry about the weight.'

Sorry, not much help I know but good luck

x

I have been on this medication for about a year now, I started on 15mg but now on 45mg. I have put over a stone on in weight but my weight gain is less of a concern when it comes to my mental health as without it I would be very suicidal. Hope this helps :-)

Hi, I totally agree google is dangerous. Thanks for replying I've got the doctors in the morning so hopefully will get it sorted x

hi lisa, my o/h has been on mirtazapine now for 9 months now, they are great for helping you sleep, but the drawbacks are they do put weight on you, my o/h is not a very big eater at all with being very anxious, she has put on about 9 lb in weight, she is seeing her doc on Monday to see if he will change them. there are lots of different meds now,so have a chat with your doc if you at all worried. jasper xx
