Hi my name is Victoria, I am new to anxiety.. I'm 19, and I had my first anxiety attack back in early October.. I was in a movie theatre and my arm felt weird kinda and so i was like oh it's nothing then i started thinking 'wait, doesn't your shoulder hurt when you're gona have a heart attack?' So i was like uhhh.. Then my chest started feeling numb on the left side where my arm felt weird.. So i was panicking but i made myself calm down a little even though the numbness was still there.. So car ride home felt so long ugh, got home tried to stay occupied.. Went to bed, woke up in the middle of the night coz my cat but it also made me think bout my chest so i got worried & went downstairs & started walkin around & tried to drink somethin but i felt to anxious so i got so worked up i was goin nuts i went to take a walk but it didn't help at all.. So i went in my moms bed & MADE myself fall asleep..

The next day i felt a lil anxious still so later in the day i was a lil worried i tried to eat somethin but i couldnt eat or drink i was to upset i guess so i went to the doc & they said my heart is fine, everything is fine, you just have anxiety.. So i was like thank god nothin is wrong but now i have to deal with this? The doc said go to your family physicion for meds and i'm thinking.. Oh no! I hate pills, i don't trust it.. What if i get depressed or i get one of those fatal side effects?

so i haven't gone yet..

And i just want to know if any of you are or have gone thru this before? And what's your opinion?

I'm curious..

I don't want to take meds :\

And when ever i get weird, i take a deeeeep breathe in and through my nose out through my mouth & i close my eyes & make myself calm down & usually it helps!

But should i take meds?

What other things could i do to calm down? And what abouy prevention?

Sometime's i'll start to feel weird for no reason.

Thanks :)

Xoxo -Vic

Hi Victoria and welcome to the site.

It sounds like you are battling with anxiety, the breathing technique you are doing is a good thing to do. You do need to see you doctor you can say no to any tablets they offer you, they might be able to give you other coping strategies.

Keep talking on here, I'm sure someone else will pop up with further suggestions for you.

Take care x

Hi Victoria,

Welcome to our community. I'm 19 too. :)

Well done for getting your symptoms and story down, you describe it well and I hope it helps. First and foremost, you're not alone. It sounds like what you're experiencing is Health Anxiety, it's common and perfectly treatable. It doesn't mean taking medication either. It's your decision and down to personal preference, so don't worry about that. :) There are all kinds of treatments 'self help' methods available.

There are also a whole range of relaxation techniques that can help to ease the symptoms of anxiety and get you into a better frame of mind. Just simply taking time out of 10 mins of the day to sit down, close your eyes, and clear your mind helps. :) I believe starts of with simply talking your problems through, so I could you could say your journey to recovery starts here (forgive the cliché xD ). :) We'll all be here to help you through it and advise. Others might have different opinions to me, but remember ultimately it's up to you but you want to do and no one can force you to do anything your not comfortable with.

Gentle (((hugs)))

Thanks both of you..

And what's the difference between health anxiety and others?

Does this anxiety ever go away?

A common thing that causes me to worry is having something happen like a symptom, and thinking what if this never goes away, omg, & i panic.. Haha but i remind myself that nothin is wrong, just calm down, breathe.. Think about other things.. You know?

And do you guys take any meds? If so which ones and what do they help you with? :)

Thnx

Hi Victoria,

First and foremost, remember everything passes - I mean EVERYTHING. So any symptom will go away eventually, you don't have to worry about being stuck with it forever. The only constant is change.

I know exactly what you mean though. Sometimes I get anxious about my health too and I have to FORCE it out of mind, just make telling myself that if the discomfort persists if I will go to the doctor, but there's nothing I can at this second, so what it is the point of worrying about it now?

To answer your question, I'm not taking any medication at the mo, but I did go on Sertraline at once (which is an SSRI and can be used to treat anxiety, and it was fine - no unpleasant side affects, not that I was aware of anyway. :) ) What we have to remember is our doctor wouldn't prescribe the medication if they thought there was a risk, and even if side affects did arise the doctor will monitor it and allow to stop taking it or lower the dosage if you want to.

(((hugs)))

Hi Victoria, the difference is what causes your anxieties is it your health or is it other things. They can be linked as well. I take meds and have on and off for a while, everybody seems to take different meds, I think it depends on the individual. Anxiety can go away. You are doing a really good thing by telling yourself that nothing is wrong and everything will be fine xx

Hey there and welcome:)

I can recommend a couple of web sites or you can down load them on your phone.

calm.com and head space

I use these regularly and don't use meds.

I do use vitamins such as b6 and evening primrose which helps me.

Hope that helps :) xxx

Thank you so much.. What is CBT?

in reply to viclovesmcr

CBT, is cognitive behaviour therapy and over here we either get from our national health service or we can pay for it from private counsellors. It helps to retrain your thoughts.

Hi Victoria.

CBT is cognative behaviour therapy I have had this it can be 1on1 or group therapy I found it very helpful as it helps you understand how anxiety affects you, and gives you advice on how to control it .

I'm just so happy that i'm not alone and that this anxiety, it can't and won't hold me back.. I won't let it. I'm gona still be me and pursue all my dreams:)

I'm gona look into CBT..

Hi Vic. Sorry to hear of one so young having an anxiety attack or panic attack. I think you need to be aware that this may have been a one off and it will never come back again. 5 years ago I had a severe pain across my chest. I rang the dr. who told me not to move and sent an ambulance straight away. I was hospitalized for a few days. I only took a spray that opens up the windpipe to enhance breathing. Now I have never had to take any meds. at all since then I am happy to say. I was asked if I was worrying about anything. They wanted to know what triggered this panic attack. I think you would be well firstly not to worry but to follow your Drs. orders and think about what may have caused your body to react in such a manner. Since then I stay away from people who cause me concern. I try to exercise and eat a healthy diet. Have since lost 3 stone thank goodness. I took relaxation classes and found they helped. Do hope this is of some help to you Vic. Try and stay relaxed and positive pet you have your whole life ahead of you. Live it well. Every blessing x
